Shockingly as you may find this I agree with you. My point was that I don't feel sorry for Rodney King because he is the kind of person that would naturally find himself receiving a beatdown for allowing himself to be put in the situation that he, himself, created. It has absolutly nothing to do with race, ethnicity,or any other reason beyond his obvious stupidity.
I do agree that the cops overreacted, but I also know that these same cops are human too, and they were rightfully furious at this idiot for the danger that he caused. Having said that, I fully respect, and honor everyone's individual rights. Even an "asshat" like Rodney King. Hell, I'm a conservative. We're all about individual rights. So while I may respect his rights I still have very little sympathy for the moron.
I think it's fairly safe to say that you, and I, are simpatico on this issue judging by your post.

I'm not sure that being "rightfully furious at this idiot for the danger that he caused" is grounds for the beating King took. Nor was his slowness to comply, which was non-threatening to any viewer of the tape...including the original taper (a kind of bootlegger) who turned it in to authorities.
Where do we stop letting cops off for unprofessional conduct just because they're righteously pissed-off professionals? What if healthcare workers slapped you around every time they got ticked at you in the emergency room?
On the night of the beating and tonight, Rodney King failed to be a role model for anyone. (Except perhaps Mel Gibson.) Yet King's immediate offenses that night were slight, and his disobedience to police could have been countered by...calling in more cops, which would have kept everybody safer and more honest.
Just because the cops had to drive fast and risk causing danger to themselves and citizens in order to catch King does not justify their conduct. Mostly, we use these excuses to collapse Martin Luther King and Rodney King in our consciences, and rationalize how they all deserve a beatin' for uppityness.
Rodney King...he's the guy in "Tumbling Dice." Oh, you thought that was Eddie Murphy in a zoot suit and long-feathered fedora? Do we love these people better when they can sing and dance and grin? And less when they're all sixes and sevens and ni-yi-yines?
