It was a toss-up between him and Bowie.
Thing is, if I had to list my 20-30 favourite acts, only maybe 5 or 6 of them would be bands. it's nearly all solo artists. (Lucinda, Lou reed, Marley, Sinatra, Zevon, Jerry Lee lewis and loads of others)
But since you insist
Its hard to pick a favourite Johnny Cash album. I love all the Unchained albums plus the 'Unearthed' boxed set, the Folsom Prison/San Quentin discs and the early 60s concept albums like Bitter tears, Ride This Train etc. If pushed, I'll go for "Solitary Man - American Recordings III" for favourite album and "Hurt" for favourite song. What an epitaph that was.

Thanks! One thing I love about Van is basically the way (IMO) he has no true Golden Period not because he never became excellent but because just about every album is solid or better. That and the fact that I'm always finding songs by him that move me.
Anyway back on topic, i REALLY wanted to put the Byrds in there for their resonance but I'm not familiar enough.

I was just kidding you. Your tastes sir, are immpeccable; unlike Striesand fans. |

3-Who.
4-David Bowie.
5-????-that's a real question mark, of all time is too much, I saw so many bands, I'll leave it at 4. |

Interesting that of the 4 of us who picked Dylan, three have 'Visions of Johanna' as our favourite song.
There was an online poll on one of the fansites some years ago where that song was the clear winner. Most hardcore fans seem to revere it in a way that Stones fans rave about Gimme Shelter.
Yet in the new 51-song, 3-CD 'Dylan' compilation - where the track listing suppposedly leaned heavily on votes from fans - it's nowhere to be found (in fact, its never been on ANY Dylan compilation). Nonsensical. |

That is really interesting Gazza as well as quite unsettling. |
