christijanus Jimi's 'Watchtower' best cover
(Monday November 29, 2004 05:30 PM)

Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" has been voted the best ever cover version.

Hendrix covered the Bob Dylan song, taken from the 1967 album "John Wesley Harding", within weeks of hearing the original.

Allmusic.com notes: "Raging and climactic where Dylan's had been soft-paced and relaxed, Hendrix's version became a rock standard."

"Perhaps the most glowing tribute to Hendrix came from Dylan himself, who began performing his own song in a version closer to Hendrix's than the original."

The cover topped a poll of music writers in The Daily Telegraph. The top 50 cover version were as follows:

Gazza whatever fuckmooks voted to put those versions by the Pet Shop Boys and the Scissor Sisters in the Top Ten should have been drowned at birth - as well as their offspring, just in case the lack of judgement is genetic.

best cover ever? IMO - The song thats at #40, only Bobby Fuller's version, instead of The Clash's (which is also good)

glencar And say, that Gary Jule version of Mad World sucks. The original is slow enough.

Mel Belli I'll take Shatner's version of "Rocket Man" over Kate Bush's.

Gazza As much as I love The Byrds' cover of Mr Tambourine Man, I'd take Shatner's cover of that one too!

Nasty Habits But ah, where is that elusive "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" Shatner is said to have laid down in '68?

Any list of cover versions that does not go: #1. Louie Louie - The Kingsmen (Richard Berry) has had its homework eaten by the dogs.

VoodooChileInWOnderl To have the final take of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" the Experience almost broke as Jimi was in LSD trying to make a perfect take, even Eddie and specially Noel freaked out and Noel almost quit the band just for that reason. At least the final take rocks...

The list sucks

I have a tape I made long long time ago with covers of Bob Dylan I named it "Dylan by others"; I think Rod & The Faces have great covers of Dylan, and Joe Cocker has a funny reggae version of seven days

The covers of The Beatles by Humble Pie are hilarious as only the lyrics remain there (except for Anna)

I don't like Dave Mathews Band but their cover of "All Along the Watchtower" is great too

Willie Dixon is one of the bluesmen more "covered"
