No - they only played SNL once - 7th Oct. 1978
Youre probably better getting that show on video or DVD. Its more fun to watch than it is to listen to,as Mick has a sore throat and rasps his way through the 3 songs. |

they didnt actually PERFORM on that show. Its just a collection of promo videos. Same with the 1973 broadcast
SNL '78 was the only guest appearance on US TV by the Stones between the Ed Sullivan Show in '69 and the MTV Awards in '89

No...its not a fake. But its not a live guest appearance either.
"Don Kirshners Rock Concert" broadcast the promos from the Goats Head Soup and IORR albums in 1973 and 1974.
The Stones had pre-recorded these performances for TV use. The versions used are a bit different than those versions on the albums (they were recorded several months after the album versions) - the vocals are recorded "live", for example. In some cases, most notably the promo clip used for IORR, the music is different as well.
However, theyre not live guest appearances in the way that Ready Steady Go, Ed Sullivan, Sat Night Live are, for example, in that they werent filmed in front of a studio audience.
It would be Taylor's last "contribution" as a Stone, however - yeah

Bowie isnt on the finished mix of the version that appears on the IORR album and which was issued as a single. He did play on the original backing track however - although this take has never been circulated. Charlie Watts doesnt play on the album version, either. Of the five members of the Stones at that time, only Mick and Keith are on that record. Keith removed much of the backing tracks and added some guitars. Woody is the other guitarist, Willie Weeks plays bass and Kenny Jones is on drums - with Stu on piano.
Woody also played bass on the original backing track that Bowie was on,, which was recorded at Woody's house, but Willie Weeks later overdubbed his own bass part instead
