Stones fans' anger at street name
Rolling Stones fans are upset by a U-turn on plans to name a street in Gloucestershire after the band's late guitarist.
Brian Jones Close was to make up part of a new development in the Park area of Cheltenham, where houses are selling upwards of 300,000.
But prospective buyers complained that the guitarist's rock star lifestyle was not appropriate to represent the area.
Bryant Homes agreed to rename the street after the founder of the town's literature festival, John Moore.
Some fans have expressed displeasure at the decision.
David Reynolds of the Brian Jones Fan Club told the BBC: "I thought what a shame, here we go again: wouldn't it be fantastic to live in Brian Jones Close and have the fan club based there?"
Born and buried in Cheltenham, Brian Jones died at the age of 27, in 1969.
Other famous person street names in Cheltenham include Brosnan Drive and Lazenby Court - a neighbourhood of spy actors nestling beside the GCHQ building.

Rolling Stones fans have accused Bryant Homes of "caving in" to "snotty" residents who objected to a street being named after the wayward guitarist Brian Jones.
Nigel Jones (no relation), the Liberal Democrat MP for Cheltenham and the chairman of the local Brian Jones fan club, said fans view the move to rename Brian Jones Close as a "slap in the face".
Brian Jones, who died in 1969 aged 27, was born and is buried in Cheltenham.
Residents and prospective buyers of the 335,000-plus homes in Brian Jones Close were reportedly put off by a street named after a drug addict. The developer has now applied to rename the road after John Moore, the Gloucestershire writer.
Mr Jones said: "John Moore was the founder of the town's literature festival and Brian Jones was a very talented local musician who made good. Both deserve to have something named after them."
"Bryant Homes have caved in to the demands of a few snotty residents," he said. "If they succeed in changing the name they should help us pay for a statue in The Promenade to remember this great musician. He is part of the town's culture."
A Bryant Homes spokeswoman said the company had applied for the close to be renamed. She said: "Cheltenham borough council named the road in question Brian Jones Close from a list of prominent local people supplied by Bryant Homes.
"Bryant makes every effort to ensure its customers' satisfaction and, in response to their requests, the company has applied for the street to be renamed John Moore Gardens." |
