Sir Stonesalot Never Mods? The Who? Are you kidding?

Ever hear the song I Am The Face? It's a Mod anthem!!

They were definately Mods...all the way. In fact, along with The Small Faces, they were at the musical forefront of the Mod movement.

Yes yes, I know that most of the band members denied it. But that was just PR.

Honky Tonk Man Well The Who and The Small Faces were marketed as mods, but I've always thought that neither actually were. According to Kenny Jones, none of them ever had ever been on a Vespa or Lambreta scooter and were only dressed as mods to cash in on the craze.

Brainbell Jangler What's playing today? The same thing that plays on this day every year. "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" by Arlo Guthrie, of course. It's THANKSGIVING, people!

Gazza The Who were never real mods. As HTM says, it was more a marketing tool. See the liner notes to "Quadrophenia" - 'they werent a Mod band, but Mods liked them...'

'I'm The Face' wasnt really a Mod 'anthem', for the simple reason that the song, which was the band's first single when they were called the High Numbers, wasnt a hit. It might be something of an 'anthem' to some now, but in 1964 it was merely a blip on the musical radar.

Sir Stonesalot Hmmmm.

They dressed Mod. They played to Mod crowds. They were all zingin' about on speed(the Mod drug of choice). They wrote songs about Mod culture, hits or not. The only reason that they weren't riding scooters was that they had the cash to ride in cars.

You know what they say...if it looks like shit, and it smells like shit, then it probably IS shit.

Not that The Who or the Small faces were shit...they were awesome IMO.

I think that they were indeed Mods. And then when the Mod thing ran it's course...they went long hair. So to cash in on THAT, they disavowed the whole Mod thing. Lots of bands do that. They start out one place, go in a different direction later, and then they like to rewrite their history to fit where they end up.

Now I could be wrong...this is just a theory on my part. OK, it's not completely mine...it was informed by the book below. It's a great read.

Nellcote Hey SS, you forgot!
Rory, 3/4 of Original Skynyrd, Hendrix & Mick Ronson are not coming down for breakfast tomorrow, they are all on my recent play list. Dead Music is sometimes the best music! And I see none of these on your Dead People tribute!
I do have to give you props, it's a mighty good dead list y'all got going there. Not as good as the Porno week, however.
I'm going to get my my space page up soon, but, it will be after your Dead week, BTW, well, as I have no control over these items, I'm hoping it's after your Dead week..
OK, the Cap'n & Coke is calling...BTW, does Ian Billen have a my space page?
