Topic: The Who dropped from #7 to #45 this week Return to archive Page: 1 2 3

Poison Dart Did anybody see that The Who dropped from #7 all the way down to #45 this week?

Holy shit, that was a steep drop.

This isn't going to sell 1/2 of what A Bigger Bang sold in the US.

I didn't expect this album to be a blockbuster. But, those are pathetic numbers for the first album in 25 years, by one of the biggest bands ever.
16th November 2006 10:48 PM
VoodooChileInWOnderl Pathetic indeed, the album is really great, I love it!
16th November 2006 11:08 PM
Poison Dart Yeah, I agree. The album is very good.

Record companies are having a hard time selling new music from classic rock stars. Unless they do shitty (Rod Stewart) cover albums.

There has to be a way to get bands like The Who (that have massive fan bases)to move more product. I bet there are a lot of people out there that don't even realize that the Who has a new album on the market.

They don't have trouble selling on the road.
17th November 2006 05:32 AM
corgi37 Actually, i disagree a bit with what you say. I dont think the Who have a massive fan base at all. I think they have a loyal fan base, and thats about it. Never have they really been a high volume selling artist. A few exceptions like Tommy aside. Some of their sales figures are pretty woeful to tell the truth.

The Who were more a live act. They were one of the top draw cards in the 70's. But still, their albums didnt sell well at all.

I agree. They were a successful singles band in the UK from 65-67, but never quite made number 1 probably because they were not poppy enough. The Who's reputation is primarily based on their great live shows.

I know lots of people who own best-of's, but absoloutley nothing else.

rolling who 'Who's Next' has sold well over 3 million albums (possibly 4 million by this point) in the U.S.

'Tommy' was in the U.S. album charts for 47 straight weeks, which was almost unheard of in 1969-70. It was sorta the 'Dark Side of the Moon' of its day.

'Tommy', 'Quad' and 'Who Are You' had all sold more than 2 million U.S. albums as of 10 years ago (again, possibly more than 3 mill by this point).

Ture, The 'Oo never had a No. 1 in the U.S., but both 'Quad' and 'Who Are You' hit No. 2 and they had 10 albums reach the Top 10.

The States did'nt know who they were 'till about 1967. The bands most successful chart period was probably 1965-1966. Not maybe in overal sales, but in terms of chart positioning. A popular debut LP and a stack of top ten singles.

It's quite simple really. The Who were always the 3rd or 4th favourite band in terms of poularity. Thats why they've sold less than the Beatles and The Stones.
17th November 2006 11:55 AM
Gimme Shelter I agree that "Endless Wire" is great. It has really grown on me especially since I saw them in San Jose play some of the new material live. I wouldn't be surprized to see it get some Grammy nominations.
17th November 2006 12:03 PM
Ten Thousand Motels The Who were always pretty good. I think the loss of Keith Moon kind of fucked things up though. He and Entwistle were a perfect fit for that band. Pete's (considerable)talent can only take that band so far. I haven't heard Endless Wire yet but I know already its as good as any new stuff out there.

Endless Wire has been getting fairly solid reviews here, but with their legacy, there is a tedancy to compare it to their 60's and 70's output. If people learnt to forget their past, then they'd probably view the latest release differently.

Soldatti The album droped from 81,000 copies the first week to only 25,000 in the second.
Sadly, there's no market in U.S for new music of big bands like the Stones, Who or Aerosmith. The people only wants the hits or cover albums, very sad.

Do people actually buy new music? I thought you could download everything for free these days.

These are impressive numbers. About as good as the recent Iron Maiden or Judas Priest releases. They sell even more tickets than those bands though which is a total mystery to me.
18th November 2006 02:58 AM
corgi37 It's totally over for all the older bands, except U2. A terrifying thought, but so true.

The so-called "heritage" acts can still draw a crowd, and probably always will. I guess rap, hip-hop, r&b, urban - whatever - is whats moving units, but does not really translate to a success live because.

1. Kids dont have money
2. Venues might hesitate to book a act that might draw a (ahem) "undesirable" crowd".
3. Playing live in no way improves cd sales, as they are popular already. I would say a hot clip is more value for money than 3 months on tour.
4. U2 consistantly align themselves with fashionable things, hence, maintain a youthful following.

Back to the Who. Those sales mentioned above are for a 40 year period!Christ, if they only sold 2-3 mill of Tommy in the U.S., thats bad. That includes 8 track, cassette and of course, cd re-issues. I might add, Exile has sold very poorly. It is fine to say the WHO had 10 top 10 records, but what were they after week 2? Or week 3?

Sales wise, the Who are just not in the hunt. Never were. The live reputation helped them out. I cant believe Quadrophenia sold so many units in the U.S. I mean, hardly any Yank got it. A point that both Roger & Pete realised during that tour. A tour the whole band hated! It got to the point where Pete had to explain every fucking song.

Meaty, beaty, big and bouncy - I reckon that sold pretty well. Who are you was huge here in Oz in 78, but every album prior bombed. Who's next was popular, but i dont think it was massive here. Probably because they lashed us so badly and wouldnt tour here.

Anyway, who gives a fuck? Because rock is fucked. Country is white mans music now. The rest of us are just fogeys clinging to a dying brand of music. And, no retro act like Oasis or Jet is gonna save rock.

You mean The Who never had a number one single in the states???.....

Woes me,

I never knew that. They surely had to have a number one album.

I know CCR never had a number one single for sure. Another pretty big suprise.

Is this true of The Who?

rolling who It's true -- The Who never had a No. 1 album or single in the States. 'Quad' and 'Who Are You' each hit No. 2.

In fact, they only had ONE top 10 single in the States -- "I Can See For Miles", which hit No. 9 in 1967. That's it!!! Amazing, innit? Of course, Pete also had a top 10 single with "Let My Love Open the Door", which hit No. 9 in 1980.

Quiz question: Can you name the only U.S. No. 1 album and Top 5 song on which Pete Townshend participated?

Could it be Elton John's version of Pinball Wizard? The Tommy soundtrack?

rolling who Nope -- the only No. 1 album on which The Who appeared was the 'Woodstock' soundtrack.

The only top 5 song on which Pete appeared was "Something in the Air" by Thunderclap Newman, which he produced and on which he also played bass.
18th November 2006 10:09 PM
mrhipfl I was thinking "something in the air," BUT!!! it only reached number one in the UK. It went to no. 37 in the US.

Not to be smarmy, I probably just missed it, but where are the gross concert receipts numbers on that website? Do you have to be a member to see that? I've been looking for The Who's concert attendance and gross earnings figures for this tour and can't really find it anywhere.
