Including Keith, Ron or Mick Taylor (if any of them are amongst your picks), who are currently your 3 favorite rocks guitarists (irrespective whether nayone named is deceased or still alive) and please say why, for anyone named. |

Keith - turned rhythm guitar into a skilled art
Hendrix - genius, he could make a guitar sound like something from outer space like no one else could
Jimmy Page - the riff man , also has such an all-round depth of skills including lead and slide

** Living **
Pete Townshend
Keith Richards
Mick Taylor
Eric Clapton is such a lovely player , but these three play their axe with such fury , passion , vitality , emotion , grace & aplomb that I would MUCH rather listen to Pete , Keith & Mick --- Indeed , I hope they NEVER stop playing electric guitar ( they are soooooo good at it ) .

Because the original question asked only for "rock" guitarists, I have had to leave out Muddy Waters:
1. Ry Cooder
2. Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Blackmore's Night
3. Joey Santiago of the Pixies
immediately right behind those three:
4. Mick Taylor
5. Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes
6. Slash of G'n'R'
7. Keith Richards
8. Mick Jones of the Clash and Big Audio Dynamite
9. Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule
10. James Burton
11. Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos
12. Dave Alvin, but more for his Blasters' work than for the Guilty Men material
13. Nels Cline, formerly of Geraldine Fibbers, and now with Wilco.
Once I actually get the chance to see Derek Trucks in concert, I get the feeling that he may place relatively high on this list.

That's quite a tough one...
It's more of a top five for me.
1. Townshend
2. Richards
3. Neil Young
4. Jerry Garcia
5. George Harrison
Honorable mentions go to Danny Whitten, Mick Ronson, Bob Weir, Mick Jones, Robert Johnson (because, without him, where would some of our favorite rockers be?), John McLaughlin, Syd Barrett, Mick Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell (folky, sure, but damn that girl knew her alternate tunings), Frank Zappa, and Ronnie Wood.

First off, I hate wanking guitarists, guitarists who overplay everything, use the song to showcase their abilities rather than use the guitar to fit the song. (Most eighties rock) That said......
Mike Campbell (Tom Petty)- Never overplays, comes up with great supporting lines, a songwriter's guitarist.
Jimi Hendrix- Nothing more to say here.
Pete Townsend- After seeing the Who a couple of times recently, I really think he's reinvented his electric guitar playing. Still great.
Mark Knopfler- I'm not a huge Dire Straits fan, or even a huge Mark Knopfler fan, but he plays beautiful melodic lines within good songs.
