Topic: Rolling Stone's top 10 albums in *new, equally worthless* poll! Return to archive
11-18-03 06:48 PM
TheSavageYoungXyzzy 1. The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
3. The Beatles, Revolver
4. Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
5. The Beatles, Rubber Soul
6. Marvin Gaye, What's Going On
7. The Rolling Stones, Exile on Main Street
8. The Clash, London Calling
9. Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde
10. The Beatles, The Beatles (The White Album)

OK. Pet Sounds at #2? Sgt. Pepper, the most overrated album of all time (elevated from a nice little psychadelic trinket to "something that defies negative press"), at #1?

At least Dylan got on there twice. Where is Let It Bleed? Where is Quadrophenia? Where are my pants?

Kjell "Rolling Stone's top 10 albums in *new, equally worthless* poll!"

I can only find one so here are the other nine (?)

The Rollin Stones No.2. 1965
Out Of Our Heads. 1965
Aftermath. 1966
Beggars Banquet. 1969
Let It bleed. 1970
Sticky Fingers. 1971
Some Girls. 1978
Tattoo You. 1981
Voodoo Lounge. 1994

glencar This RS list is worthless. 4 Beatles albums in the Top 10? And no Abbey Road among them? I've always disdained Sgt. Pepper.
11-18-03 10:04 PM
Highwire Rob Hmmm... Van's Astral Weeks usually makes it up there with the Beatles & Beach Boys on the European polls.

glencar How about the Stones?
11-18-03 11:15 PM
Trey Krimsin The one thing about this top ten that annoys me to no end is the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" at number two. I may not share this opinion with many other people, but I think the Beach Boys are the most overrated band of all time.
11-18-03 11:32 PM
glencar Nah, that would be the Beatles.

No, no, I was saying that Rolling Stone magazine published another list of 'best albums' or whatever, and this was the top ten.

-tSYX --- I said a-move over once, move over twice...

Prodigal Son I can live with almost everything included in the top 10 except Pepper. The rankings are fucked up. If you could reorganize this list, what would you make it and then also what would your personal list be? Here's my corrections:
1. Exile on Main Street
2. The Beatles, Revolver
3. Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde
4. Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
5. Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
6. Rubber Soul
7. The Clash, London Calling
8. The White Album
9. What's Going on
10. Sgt. Pepper.
My own top 10 is:
1. Exile
2. Revolver
3. Blonde on Blonde
4. Pet Sounds
5. Hwy. 61 Revisited
6. Beggar's Banquet
7. Blood on the Tracks-Dylan
8. The White Album
9. Electric Ladyland-Hendrix
10. Who's Next
I can remember putting a top 100 list together a while back and I know I put BB, Exile, Sticky Fingers, Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones Now!, Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Let it Bleed, Some Girls and Tattoo You on that list. Both them and the Beatles got 10 in there, Dylan had 8, so did Neil Young, 6 or so for the Who, etc. Can't find it right now, but I do remember up to 50 or so of what I ranked.
11. Let it Bleed
12. London Calling
13. Tonight's the Night-Neil Young (a man who has repeatedly stated, "The Rolling Stones are probably my favourite band of all time")
14. Rubber Soul
15. Sticky Fingers
16. Abbey Road
17. Astral Weeks
18. Are You Experienced?
19. On the Beach-Neil Young
20. Born to Run-Springsteen
21. Led Zeppelin IV
22. Bringing it All Back Home-Dylan
23. The Basement Tapes-Dylan and the Band
24. Live at Leeds-the Who
25. Moondance-Van Morrison
26. The Clash
27. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
28. A Hard Day's Night
29. Younger Than Yesterday-Byrds
30. After the Gold Rush-Neil Young
31. Aftermath
32. Can't Buy a Thrill-Steely Dan
33. Rust Never Sleeps-Neil Young
34. Pretzel Logic-Steely Dan
35. Loaded-Velvet Underground
36. Some Girls
37. Quadrophenia
38. My Generation
39. Houses of the Holy-Led Zep
40. Every Picture Tells a Story-Rod Stewart
41. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
42. Honky Chateau-Elton John
43. Between the Buttons
44. With the Beatles
45. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
46. THe Who Sell Out
47. Fun House-Iggy Pop and the Stooges
48. Songs in the Key of Life-Stevie Wonder
49. The Sun Sessions-Elvis
50. The Rolling Stones Now!

corgi37 That is the most ridiculous list they have ever done. Is Wenner having a reversion to childhood thing happening. 8 albums from the 60's, 4 by the fab fuckers, 2 from the 70s and then...pfft. I dont like him at all, but would any Springsteen album be there? What about Harvest? If not Who's Next, then Tommy? The Doors? How can the Beatles get in anyway?? They were a pop band until 68, not a rock band. Nirvana's Nevermind? And yeah, Hendrix! What a piece of irrelevant crap. this list is.

egon where's thriller?

or brothers in arms...

Factory Girl Top 3 must be-
1. Exile
2. Funhouse-Stooges
3. Blonde*2

The Stooges are so unloved by the media. Where is my Kleenex???

Soldatti Here the Stones albums on the list:

#57 Beggars Banquet
#63 Sticky Fingers
#108 Aftermath
#114 Out Of Our Heads
#181 The Rolling Stones Now!
#211 Tattoo You
#269 Some Girls
#355 Between The Buttons

Well at least 10 Rolling Stones albums are on the list, but only one Queen album (where is "The Game") and no one Bon Jovi album on all the list?
11-20-03 12:01 AM
glencar RS should be ashamed of itself. Where are their standards?
11-20-03 12:28 AM
prism Wasn't Rolling Stone Magazine taken over last year by the editors of a boys magazine, Maxim or Stuff?
11-20-03 12:37 AM
glencar Jann Wenner stills own it, I believe.

Yeah, Bon Jovi should have at least Slippery When Wet, the fantastic new album and maybe some other albums whatever they are... These lists are always pointless, just like the best guitarist lists. What is even more duller than the lists is that people always go like "Ooh E.C. is third but how come SRV is only seventh", you know. What matters most is what you like and not what the others. Anyways, I like to think that way.

glencar I want more Stones in the Top 10 & I want Exile at the top. Otherwise, it's just fun to look at & that's just barely.
