Gazza A few people have asked me what this gig was like, so thought I should write a little bit about it. Went over on Sunday with a mate for what was the final night of Lu's brief European tour which had been postponed from July 2005. Never seen her before - in fact only got into her music when Martha sent me a CDR of her opening act for Neil Young in Columbus three years ago, and got immediately hooked.

Pleasant surprise to see how close our hotel was to the venue. Knew it was in the same street but to arrive and realise that we were directly across the street from the stage door with Lu's tour bus parked outside the entrance was a nice start to the afternoon. We'd arranged to meet jostorm and her husband for something to eat later, so we'd a bit of a trek out to the Japanese noodle restaurant she'd decided on. Was quite nice though, although my fears about what Johanna had in mind for our faux-"M2 Summit" were justified when she started producing wigs and Viking helmets and tried (unsuccessfully) to get me to pose in them...LOL. She did however present me with a sealed poster which I was told not to open until I got home (which in retrospect may not have been a good idea as had they asked me at the airport what it was, I'd have had to say "no idea - all I know is that its safe to unveil it in front of my wife". Turns out it was a terrific and quite huge Gered Mankowitz mid-60's shot of the Stones used for the 'Let It Bleed' documentary. Dont know how she knew I love all Mankowitz's Stones shots from that era, but it was much appreciated and it'll be framed shortly. Thank you.

Met Billyboll from Liverpool (who hasnt posted here for too long) at the venue for a couple of pre-show 'aperitifs' and skipped the opening act.

We had front row seats. Billy was a few rows behind us and Jo was in the side balcony overlooking the stage and threatening to flick chewing gum down at us (see her Raconteurs show incident from a few weeks ago - http://www.novogate.com/board/968/Archives/10%2D21%2D2006/232121-1.html)

Lucinda was incredible. One of the best gigs I've EVER been to. Played for 2 and a quarter hours and would have played even longer only for an 11 pm curfew and the fact that they had to get up early to film a TV appearance for the BBC. She even asked for a few requests. I shouted for "Essence" and then "Jailhouse tears" which is an unreleased song thats gonna be on her next album. So she turns to the band, they discuss it, Doug the guitarist says "No...its too difficult" and she replies "no - its not!!" and they kinda wing it and pull it off (she has a new rhythm section so hadnt played it yet with THIS version of her band). Her voice is just amazing. She could have filled that place without using a microphone. God knows where it comes from. She changed the set around considerably, played lots of songs off "Car Wheels", about 4 new ones and ended the show with "Hard Time Killin Floor Blues" - in the middle she launched into this rap/tirade about how things havent changed in the 70 years since Skip James wrote it - quite powerful and off the cuff stuff. Normally that stuff would leave me a bit cold, but it kinda fitted the song.

My mate and I waited for an hour afterwards and she came out. One of the crew said "dont be takin any photos cos shes wasted" but as it turned out she stood there and chatted to us for about 5 or 10 minutes, confided about being pissed off at how strict the people at the venue were and what weird regulations they had, apologised for keeping us waiting, signed CDs and got photos taken with her (time I got my scanner working again!) She was a real sweetheart to chat to. I harrassed her about playing Belfast some time, then asked her what it was like playing with Bruce the other night (he'd joined her onstage in London for two songs on Friday) and what was nice about the way she talked about it was that she overlooked the fact that shes a respected star in her own right and just talked about it as if she was a gushing fan meeting someone she admired - just the way WE would - "oh it was great. I couldnt believe it. And he was such a nice guy", etc. I told her that it was me who'd asked her to play "Jailhouse tears" and said "y'know some of us have to collect all these bootlegs so thats how we know all these songs" and she laughed her ass off. She was obviously quite surprised someone had asked for that one. Then I went to give her a restrained and respectful peck on the cheek to say goodbye and....she fuckin throws her arms around me, gives me a big hug and a kiss on both cheeks... a couple more drinks and you never know. I may have scored.

She was genuinely really nice and funny as hell . The first time I've ever seen her and what a memorable evening it was. Everything I'd been told about the rapport she has with her fans was true.

Go see her if she plays near you.

Havent seen him yet. He's in England at the minute finishing his four shows there.

My four (Dublin 17-19 November and Belfast on the 21st) are still to come. Final gigs of the tour. Should be fun.

PartyDoll MEG Thanks for you review, Gazza. I love Lucinda and I'm glad to know she knows how to treat her fans right!
14th November 2006 11:26 AM
The Wick Great report. I saw her last year and she was magnificent. Great band, great songs, and just a great vibe through the whole show. If I had one small bit of advice for her though, it's to cut out the dancing.
14th November 2006 11:36 AM
Gazza She seems to have listened...LOL
14th November 2006 11:36 AM
Saint Sway great to see some folks here digging her. For me, she's the female version of Keith.

they dont make em much cooler than her
14th November 2006 11:37 AM
GotToRollMe Great review, Gazza! Sounds like you got an excellent show. So glad you got to meet her too! A hug and a kiss even! Damn, between you meeting Lucinda and Jaggergurl meeting Keith and the boys, I'm feeling left out. There's only one thing for it: I look forward to your posting the pics that Jo took...a shame she didn't talk you into the viking helmet...I would have quite enjoyed that...

Mel Belli I know this will sound blasphemous, but I don't get Lucinda, never have. I think she's highly overpraised.

Nellcote Winmx was wicked pissa!

glencar I've heard just a bit of her. What does she look like?
14th November 2006 12:21 PM
Saint Sway When I first heard her "Real Live Bleeding Fingers" I immediately thought it HAD to be written about Keith!! The lyrics about heroin... those infamous gnarly fingers...

then I started to think that maybe it was someone she was closer to like Steve Earle...

but then while she was touring to promote the record, more than once she dedicated the song from the stage to Marc Ford from The Black Crowes. She even got Marc to open a few gigs for her and come out and jam onstage with her

REAL LIVE BLEEDING FINGERS

You've got a sense of humor
You're a mystery
I heard a rumor
You're making history

Photographic dialogues
Beneath your skin
Pornographic episodes
Screaming sin

'Til its real live bleeding fingers
broken guitar strings

You are my Prince Charming
Draped in velvet robes
of all that's alarming
Raw and exposed

Shattered nerves
Itchy skin
Dirty words
and heroin

Better real live bleeding fingers
Broken guitar strings

(break)

I climbed all the way inside
Your tragedy
I got behind
The majesty

Of the different shaps
In every note
the endless tapes
of every word you wrote

With real live bleeding fingers
broken guitar strings (x2)

Gazza Dont think so, but shes worth checking out. If youre not familiar with her albums, the one to get is "Car Wheels On a Gravel Road" (theres a deluxe edition reissue of it out about now), although the "Live at the Fillmore" double CD from a couple of years ago gives a good cross section of her work, even if its live versions. I think you'd like it. Good rock n roll, with a bit of country and blues thrown in.

her new album is out in February, so I'd imagine she'll tour extensively around the country after that.

Prodigal Son Lucinda is great. She's been making records for a while but just hit her stride late in life. She's actually 53 or 54 years old. Great artist, but it's strange she's even older than my own dad. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road has to be among the top 5 albums released in the 1990s.

Bloozehound Nice review!

She's awesome

Gazza, did she say when her next album is coming out. I think it should be soon, I'd read that it might be a long "double album" type thing

As much as you like artists like Lucinda and Steve earle, you might want to go scope out the fabulous Dale Watson, he's touring with James Hand around your neck of the woods right now, they're 2 of the best artists on the "americana" scene today

Gazza New album is out 13th february. Its called "West". Seen a track listing a while back and its normal length, but shes played an amazing amount of 'new' songs in the last 18 months

thanks for the tip. Might check that out.
