Gazza personally, I think "Street fighting man" is a lyrical cop-out. It sounds 'revolutionary' but the chorus isnt.

"High wire" got them some flak here when they released it as a single during the Gulf War but it was by opportunistic tabloid journalists who hadnt even heard the song or read the entire lyrics. Its not really that controversial or political at all. Like SF man, theres a bit of fence-sitting.

Theyve released several songs which refer to the state of the world and the violent societies we live in, such as "Undercover" or "Blinded by rainbows" but I'd hardly call a song condemning terrorists who blow people up as politically controversial. It would only be so if it praised them!

The Stones' lyrics tend to touch on subjects without going really deeply into them, like youd get from other lyricists..

"Sympathy for the Devil" in many ways is a political song. Not so transparently as some of the songs weve mentioned, but more in a subliminal way.

but if you consider sex a form of politics, then they're one of the most political bands of all time!!

I think SFM is about sticking with rock n' roll and avoiding what Eric Hoffer would call a true believer.
