Argentina 2-3 England

Michael Owen scored two dramatic late goals to earn England victory in a pulsating friendly against Argentina.
Owen nodded in an equaliser on 87 minutes from Steven Gerrard's pinpoint cross and headed the winner from Joe Cole's floated centre in injury time.

Hernan Crespo put Argentina ahead from Maxi Rodrigruez's pull-back but the outstanding Wayne Rooney fired England level from David Beckham's knock-down.

Walter Samuel's downward header made it 2-1 before Owen's late intervention.

Until then it looked set to be a disappointing day for England in Switzerland's packed Stade de Geneve.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side impressed going forward but always struggled to cope with Argentina's inventive attack.

Rio Ferdinand, who kept his place in the starting line-up at the expense of Sol Campbell, and the England defence had to be on their mettle from the start.

Owen had a header ruled out for offside early on before England keeper Paul Robinson was out quickly to check Carlos Tevez's run and Terry had to block Juan Pablo Sorin's follow-up.

Crespo thought he had opened the scoring two minutes later when he tapped in Juan Roman Riquelme's free-kick, but the referee spotted some pushing.

There was just a brief lull in the action before it intensified again.

Rooney was unlucky when his shot hit the far post from Gerrard's exquisite pass but just as England appeared to be seizing control, Argentina went ahead.

Wayne Bridge, playing his first game for England in over a year, was beaten by Rodriguez, who crossed for Crespo to stab home from close-range.

Rooney, though, got the goal his dazzling first-half performance deserved when he latched on to Beckham's flick-on and poked the ball past Roberto Abbondanzieri.

Wayne Rooney was in outstanding form for England

The entertainment continued apace after the break, with Riquelme catching the eye in midfield.

The Villarreal midfielder floated in a dangerous free-kick and an unmarked Samuel lifted his header over Robinson and into the far corner.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson responded by bringing on Cole for Ledley King, allowing Gerrard to move into his preferred central midfield.

The move invigorated England and Lampard went close with a long-range shot.

Argentina keeper Abbondanzieri could only parry Beckham's free-kick and then did brilliantly to prevent Owen tapping in the follow-up.

With the clock ticking down, Eriksson introduced striker Peter Crouch and played him alongside Rooney and Owen up front.

England's attacking verve was finally rewarded when Gerrard, by now playing at right-back, crossed for Owen to head home.

The celebrations were predictably wild but they were nothing compared to the scenes minutes later when Cole set up the Newcastle striker to steal victory for Engand over their bitter rivals.

England regained the Cook Cup with a dominant pack display as Australia slumped to their seventh straight loss.
Despite going 6-3 behind after two Mat Rogers penalties, England went ahead after a well-worked try from Ben Cohen.

Charlie Hodgson added a drop goal and a penalty to make the score 16-9 but Australia battled their way back into the game with a try from Drew Mitchell.

England dominated possession and finally sealed the win when wing Mark Cueto crossed five minutes from time.

The victory is a real boost for an England side that have struggled for form and results in the two years since winning the World Cup.

Although at times England looked laboured in attack as they spurned a host of chances, Andy Robinson's men ground Australia down up front to set the platform for victory.

Australia, who have now equalled their worst run of results since 1969, showed some impressive signs going forward but the scrum disintegrated under pressure.

We always get talked up for our pack but rarely have we delivered and exceeded expectations, today they did

After a nervy start from England, Australia got the first points when scrum-half Matt Dawson lost control of the ball while he was preparing to clear from the base of a ruck and Rogers kicked over.

The Wallabies did not look like a team that were struggling for form and they should have added to their total when flanker George Smith released wing Mitchell but Sale fly-half Hodgson saved the day with a last-ditch tackle.

England were struggling to get their rhythm but Hodgson kicked over on 14 minutes when skipper George Gregan blocked Josh Lewsey as he tried to chase his own kick.

Mark Cueto has a fine try-scoring record for England

Australia almost scored again soon after when full-back Chris Latham made a darting break only for Hodgson to bring him down near the line.

England flanker Lewis Moody was sin-binned trying to stop the attack as Australia scented a try and Rogers added his second penalty.

The game seemed to turn on 27 minutes when Gregan was yellow carded and a minute later Lewsey's long pass found Cohen in plenty of space and the Northampton man crossed to mark his return to the international stage.

England player ratings

With 14-man Australia being pummelled by England's pack, the home side should have added to their tally before the break.

They did straight after half-time when Hodgson coolly slotted over a drop goal to make the score 13-6 after an aggressive start to the second period.

Rogers added his third penalty soon after but England again spurned another glorious chance near the Australia line when Corry was penalised for crossing.

More Australia reaction

Hodgson slotted over again but Australia showed their character when Mitchell powered over after an earlier break from Latham and Rogers' conversion levelled the match at 16-16.

Worryingly for England, Hodgson limped off to be replaced by Olly Barkley and the Bath man soon made his presence felt with a superb long-range penalty from just inside his own half.

Quality performance - England bossed it physically and Sheridan was immense

Have your say on Scrum V

England's dominance in the scrum was highlighted as the game entered the final 11 minutes and prop Al Baxter was sin-binned as another set-piece collapsed underneath the Australian posts.

The game was then reduced to uncontested scrums when Aussie prop Matt Dunning was stretchered off.

England kept the pressure on and sealed the win when Cueto burst through the line to make his record nine tries from nine caps.

Despite the win, focus must now switch to the task of New Zealand next week, who will provide a much sterner test than this weakened Australia side.

England gain upper hand in Multan
First Test, Multan, day one (stumps): Pakistan 244-6 v England

A determined display from England's bowlers left Pakistan fighting to salvage their first innings after day one of the opening Test in Multan.

Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison took two wickets each, and there was success for debutant Shaun Udal as the home side went to stumps on 244-6.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was unbeaten on 41, trying to marshal the lower order.

Pakistan won the toss and began well, Salman Butt hitting 74, but they lost four wickets for 22 runs in nine overs.

Pakistan appeared on the way to a good total once Butt and Shoaib Malik, their seventh opening pair in as many matches, had settled in a stand of 80.

Even the wicket of Malik, lbw to Flintoff for 39, did not take them off course.

The last session edged it just towards England - they must get through the tail quickly now

On a pitch that was slow and low from the start, England failed to exploit their sole obvious opportunity - the small amount of swing on offer early in the day.

But, with Marcus Trescothick at the helm after Michael Vaughan injured his knee last weekend, the tourists refused to let their heads drop.

An impressive display from spinner Udal, at 36 England's oldest debutant in 17 years, and Flintoff brought them back into contention.

Harmison swung the balance further in their favour with two wickets in the first over after tea.

He had danger man Younis Khan lbw for 39 then set Hasan Raza up for a loose drive at a delivery that yorked him.

Despite having two slow bowlers in their attack, Ashley Giles and Udal, England had waited until the 25th over of the day to introduce spin.

Left-armer Giles' arrival directly preceded Flintoff's wicket.

Udal celebrates his first Test wicket, dismissing Butt

Udal had to wait until after lunch to bowl his first Test delivery, which Butt lofted over cover for four.

But he soon found his line, and some turn, gaining sufficient confidence to loft a delivery up to Butt, who edged with a wild drive.

In the near-farce that followed, Trescothick juggled at slip, saw the ball bounce of his head for wicket-keeper Geraint Jones to take diving backwards.

Flintoff capitalised two overs later, with a delivery typical of former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis, utilising reverse-swing to beat new batsman Mohammad Yousuf.

After Harmison's burst, Pakistan consolidated, with Inzamam sharing a sixth-wicket stand of 55 with Kamran Akmal.

But Trescothick took the new ball five overs from the close.

And Hoggard swung a delivery away from Akmal to induce a poor short and an edge to slip, where the stand-in skipper collected.

Pakistan surprised many by selecting a single spinner, Danish Kaneria getting the nod over veteran Mushtaq Ahmed.

Leg-spin all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who has hit 350 runs and taken 14 wickets in the last four Tests, was omitted in favour of batsman Raza.

Pace bowler Shabbir Ahmed, was chosen to play in his first Test for five months after overcoming a chucking controversy, replaced Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.
