pretty funny writeup... sad times for The Two...
---------------------
Who Are They? Who, Who?
What if The Who got back together and put out their first new album since 1982? Wouldn’t that CD be a huge seller, and debut at No. 1? Yes?
Unfortunately, no. The Who released "Endless Wire" last week, but no one seems to know. The album sold 88,000 copies and finished at No. 6 this week, behind Barry Manilow and a Disney soundtrack.
How the mighty have fallen!
Frankly, I wouldn’t even have remembered that "Endless Wire" was out, except for seeing the title in a listing. Pete Townshend, perhaps overcome with his own legend, did almost nothing to promote the album or court the press. The result is apathy or unawareness, even from the most fervent fans. Luckily, a nice publicist from Universal/Republic sent me a copy late yesterday. A review will follow tomorrow. … |

I didn't think it would do more than 50k. This is good. No one was really expecting Kanye West numbers with this thing. |

Actually, The Who never sold a ton of albums like the Beatles or even Led Zepplin. Their debut position is in line what their past records.
1/Endless Wire #6 (2006)
2/It's Hard #8 (1982)
3/Face Dances #4 (1981)
4/Who by Numbers #8 (1975)
5/Who's Next #4 (1971)
6/Tommy #4 (1969)
They never hit #1 in the US. And only hit #1 in the UK once. Although the article is correct in saying they didn't do a good job pushing the album.
As far as the 88k sold goes. CD's across the board (espically for rock bands) don't sell well anymore. Check out Jessica Simpson's or Janet Jackson's latest cd sales. And they get air play on MTV + pop radio stations. Didn't Johnny Cash hit #1 a few months back with about 80k sold?
They are still considered one of the top 5 bands of all time. But, they did ruin their reputation by touring w/out new music for years. They made themselves less relevant by just mailing their tours in.

I bet they may have had a #1 between 1969 and 1982 if charts were tallied based on soundscan sales. But the classic rock industry is based on selling tickets and greatest hits packages, not new music. I think it's a really strong showing considering those circumstances. |

Uh, Bird Man & Little Wayne? WTF is that? If anyone knows please share because I do not intend to waste The Google on finding out. TIA.
(Unfortunately, I'm hip to that Hannah Montana scene) |

Those tours were designed to help out John Entwistle who was facing Prison for Tax evasion in 1989 , 1996/97 and again in 2000 .

He just sold out the Riviera in Chicago, and some music reviewers have compared John Legend to Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. He might be an act to catch the next time he is in your town. |

VL was a success during 1994-95, ABB sold good the first 3 weeks. |
