Where's Whitey?
SYNOPSIS: For more than 20 years, James J. "Whitey" Bulger has been the reputed Don of New England's Irish Mafia. Bulger has been described as a throwback to the gangsters of the 1930s: quick-witted, hot tempered, and ruthless. A petty thief turned bank robber, he spent nine years in federal prisons, including Alcatraz. After his release, Bulger allegedly established an empire in South Boston. According to authorities, Bulger ruled his turf with an iron fist, and in the process earned an estimated $25 million.
In his heyday, Whitey Bulger operated out of the back of a liquor store, on the edge of South Boston. South Boston is an insulated Irish Catholic community where Whitey Bulger, known to his friends as "Jimmy," felt right at home. Although some people apparently felt Bulger took care of the insulated community, he was also viewed as someone who shouldn't be crossed. Bulger reportedly had no qualms about flexing his muscle in full view of the neighborhood, conducting most of his business outside.
From time to time, Federal officials brought Whitey in for questioning. But because Bulger is also considered a master of eluding surveillance, they never had enough evidence to nail him. Additionally, the Boston Globe has reported there was another reason Whitey was never busted. Articles claimed he was actually working with the FBI as an informant, to bring down the Italian Mafia.
For all intents and purposes, Whitey Bulger was untouchable until an incident that allegedly occurred one night in 1989. Late in the evening, Whitey allegedly arrived at his "office" behind the liquor store, to take care of some unfinished business. Reportedly, Whitey's associate, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, stood waiting inside. Their guest of honor was a local tavern owner named Tim Connolly, whom Whitey had allegedly targeted for extortion. Two days later, after Whitey had allegedly threatened Tim Connolly, Tim did the only thing he felt he could do. He returned to the liquor store with $25,000 cash. But Connolly also did something else. He went to the FBI. They, in turn, began building a case against the so-called "Don of South Boston." Connolly provided authorities with the evidence needed to build up a federal racketeering case against Bulger.
In January of 1995, Whitey was indicted, along with his associate, Stephen Flemmi. Also indicted was "Cadillac" Frank Salemme, the boss of New England's Italian Mafia. However, Bulger managed to slip though the authorities' grasp.
Bulger is an avid reader with an interest in history. He is known to frequent libraries and historic sites. Bulger is currently on the heart medication Atenolol (50 mg). The FBI believes he is now traveling with a female companion named Catherine Greig. Greig has been charged with harboring a fugitive. Both Bulger and Greig are fitness buffs who enjoy working out, and taking long walks. Bulger and Greig love animals and may frequent animal shelters.
Bulger has been known to alter his appearance through the use of disguises. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Bulger and Greig have been spotted in Arizona, Wyoming, throught the Gulf Coast area, and California. There is now a $1,000,000 Reward in this case.

When I met him at the Chicago summit, tele and I discussed our neighborhood as he lives about 4 blocks north of me. He told me the name of his street, but he was reluctant to be any more specific.
Because I don't know tele's real name, I probably can't help Starbuck find him.
