Topic: ABB sounds less a Stones record Return to archive Page: 1 2 3
November 3rd, 2005 07:01 AM
Jair Yesterday, as was hollyday here, I took some time to listen ABB about 10 times, straight.

Imho, it's the Stones record, among ALL of them, that LESS sounds like a Stones album. To me, part is Keith solo, part is Mick solo.

The best track imo is Biggest Mistake - that sounds like the guys in the old times. However, the Keith back voice should be appear a bit more. It was mixed to low.

Also, I would let out of the record:

* Streets of love - but only because the ridicule lyrics

* BOMH - this blues is lost in there, or at least in the wrong order...Isnt a big blues, anyway.

* This place is empty, althought the nice piano, could be stayed out too.

* Sweet Neocon - ridiculous: I think here is the Dave Stewart partcipation. Pay attention on that eletronic sounds that sometimes sounds an acoustic guitar...THAT is DAVE. HE sucks.

Finally, "Laugh, I Nearly Died" is a good song, but is lacking some "substance". They should push that to some oriental rhythm, and tried harder in the chorus...

At the end, in some months, or yrs, I think i'll prefer Voodoo Lounge.

Well, just sharing.

PS - A funny thing: everytime I started to listen Sweet Neocon, my little puppy barks as a hell. See? Not even my dog can stand that song...

justforyou Well, after 10 listens in a row without skipping, the poor disc must be wearing you down...

At the moment I'm listening to it a couple of times a month, whereas I never listen to VL anymore - well, I gave my VL-CD away in '95, feeling dejected by the slickness of it. Never felt like buying it again.

Tracks I'm enjoying:

RJ,
LMDS (not happy about the start is very Steel Wheels, Primitive Cool sounding),
BOMH (getting tired of whining chorus),
ONNYA,
DB,
SN (a poppy arrangement, but a rather different type of groove),
INFAMY (Keith's sincerity shines through)

Let's see how it holds up to the test of time.

the good I think ABB is a great CD, and is far, far, better than Voodoo Lounge. I don't even think they are in the same ballpark, to be honest. I think the playing, the production, and the songwriting on ABB are all far superior to anything on VL. To me, Voodoo lounge was never a remarkable effort, and it becomes even less so as time passes. I think the reverse will be true of ABB.

exile I mean seriously does anyone actually think B2B is better than ABB

while B2B had some strong moments like Saint, ABSMB, Out Of Control it was a completelt patchy record that sounds more like a Mick and keith solo hash up than anything on ABB.

ABB is a return to back to basics. Im the first to admit Im not a fan of Let Me Down slow, She saw Me coming and the cat. But the rest of the album rocks.

best songs

Driving Too Fast
Rough Justice
ONNYA
Dangerous Beauty
November 3rd, 2005 08:14 PM
Ronnie Richards The only great song on Bigger Bang is Rough Justice. There are 4-5 decent songs (including the Keith numbers obviously) - the rest range from pathetic (sweet neocon) to merely passable.
Which makes this album average - like every other stones album since undercover
November 3rd, 2005 08:29 PM
Bob Tamp ABB is simply the best since TATTOO YOU. I lost interest in the other discs within weeks of their respective releases. I am still listening to this one regularly and liking it a lot.

Agreed. I don't get why they don't debut another song from it. Like She Saw Me Coming. Its arrangement lends itself to live
November 3rd, 2005 10:18 PM
Bruno Stone Dangerous Beauty is the best one. It has that sexy groove that is totally Stones, and the solo is wonderful, probably my favourite bit in the whole album. And the end is amazing, with the typical Mick`s angry ad libs and a guitar note that GOTTA be Keith playing, only 1 or 2 notes, but they fit perfectly while Mick ad libs.

And I agree with Jair about BOMH, is a nice blues, but no that good, when I hear it I always think it should have drums there.

IanBillen *I consider ABB my "dream type Stones album". Why? Well it's songs sound like they have always been around but they haven't. "ABB is a dream album for me" is in the context of telling a buddy I had this dream last night and I heard this Stones album with all these great songs and I can't really remember them but it doesn't exist. Well when ABB was released it was like....yeah this is it. (by the way I have no prementions or anything I am just saying what it seems like as an album) It's songs just give me the impression like I have always known them. It is strange.

When the album first came out all you heard were rave reviews
(except a minor few). Now, it is half and half. Come on. Aren't we being too critical after the initial excitement?

By the way I think it Rocks and is their best over-all effort in 20 years or more. The album is solid and no bullshit. Everyt little track is it's own gem.

Well, its a natural thing now we think different about the album, because we know it better, we heard it more times, etc....Anyway, I'm glad you like ABB so much. I wish feel the same.
But, look a song like "Rain Fall Down", for instance.
Isn't just a copy of Jagger solo "Sweet Thing"?

Also, I miss those great Mick & Keith vocals. Ok, ask for another "Casino Boogie" is too much, but they could do it something better...And thats why I loved Biggest Mistake. Remember me those old times.

Great review, Jair! my point of view is very similar of yours.I just disagree with Back of my hand.Itīs not a very good blues but itīs pure and honest. I like to hear the old guys playing what they want .

I see. But almost always an album will get better in time and as as you listen to it more especially if you initially like it off the bat, not worse.

I don't get the mixed reviews now is all.

I want to let you know I am not writing this diredcted at you Jair, or anyone really specifically but it does seem folks just like to complain or knock The Stones no matter what they do.

I respect you current stand on it though.

Sir Stonesalot I gave my copy of ABB to my kid. He doesn't listen to it anymore either.

This album blows, and it blows hard.

It sure as shit ain't the Stones that I fell in love with. This is soft rock bullshit. No edge, no danger. It's the Stones pretending to be the Stones.

Rough Justice is pretty good live, but it's pretty tame on the disc. BOMH is a noble effort, but Black Limo is far better. The rest is crap. Adult Contemporary CRAP.

At least B2B had 4 songs that I like.

Look, I'm happy ya'll wanna go ga-ga over this album. Good for you. I waited 8 years for this shit, I wanted to go ga-ga too.

You know what this is like? It like when you were a kid and you sent away for the Sea Monkeys that were in the ads in the back of comic books. There was a King and Queen Sea Monkey, and a castle and shit...it was gonna be so great. So you send away for them and you wait and wait and wait. And in your head, you are telling yourself how great its; gonna be to have a kingdom of Sea Monkeys. Finally, after waiting forever, they finally arrive. You got SEA MONKEYS! You carefully prepare the Sea Monkey's fish bowl. You are all a-twitter with anticipation. You pour the Sea Monkey eggs into the brine and.....you get some fucking brine shrimps. There is no King. There is no Queen. It's just a bunch of tiny little shrimps that die in two days. You wait all that time for this great thing...and then you get something.....not so great.

But you gotta tell all your friends how great the Sea Monkeys were because you talked it up so much. You get on the Sea Monkey message board and your all like, Yeah man, those Sea Monkeys are AWESOME. You can watch then swim and play...oh YEAH! You gotta get some! It's GREAT. But it's not great. You just have to pretend that its great because you were so stoked for that Sea Monkey experience, and you talked it up and stuff. But really you know it sucks, you just won't admit it because you don't wanna look bad.

A Bigger Bang is Sea Monkeys to me. Except I'm grown up enough to admit that it blows and was a waste of money and anticipation and time and stuff.

Still, it got the boys back out on the road. So that's a big plus. I am willing to endure 1000 A Bigger Bang type albums if it means the Stones will keep touring and playing their back catalogue.

While I dont agree at all with you assessment of ABB I do however think that is pretty fucking funny.

I also fell into the SeaMonkeys trap as a kid. probably the XRAY specs as well.

I really like Abb excepty a few fillers
Then again the only song i like on B2B was "out of control". really. maybe "saint" if i was streching it.

Its a personal opinion thing. no one is right no one is wrong.

beer if there's one thing that never will be understood, it will certainly be the frequency in which flavel ohms generate directly from unspecified sources; such as X bio origins that slowly evolve into and out of Y axioms.

IrelandCalling4 Greetings to all from an ill-with-flu(bloody weather!!) stones fan,

Firstly, before yet another '2 cents' on the ABB debate, many mentions here about the 'Babylon' record of 19 and 97.

I for one loved most of that album(though prefer the great VL...still great,11 years later*)--especially 'Lowdown','Saint',the excellent 'GunFace',2 of the 3 Keith-isms('Thief' didnae go far),'Might as well get Juiced' & 'Flip the Swictch'.

Onto ABB --

EXCELLENT:

Rough Justice
Rain Fall Down
Laugh, I Nearly Died
Back Of My Hand
This Place Is Empty(Love this one* Melancholy Keef at his best)

GOOD - VERY GOOD::

She Saw Me Coming
Dangerous Beauty
Look What The Cat Dragged In
Streets Of Love
Oh No Not You Again
Biggest Mistake

AVERAGE/FILLER:

Let me Down Slow
It Won't Take Long
Driving Too Fast
Infamy

UNDER THE RADAR:

Sweet Neocon(Musically okay, but, the lyrics are atrocious!)

November 5th, 2005 07:45 PM
glencar I love this damned album & I actually like that Cat song more & more. Sweet Neocon is even kinda funny. I could do without the Keef tunes but I wouldn't want to lose any of the others. Well, maybe that driving song...
November 5th, 2005 08:23 PM
time is on my side You know, as others have pointed out, I find it interesting how the people, who do like the album, seem to rate & rank different songs so much differently than others. To me, that's a sign of a good album. I'm no different so my breakdown list of the entire album will be different than most anyone else.

Excellent:

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
Back of My Hand
Oh No Not You Again
Laugh I Nearly Died

Very Good:

Dangerous Beauty
Driving Too Fast
It Won't Take Long
Biggest Mistake
She Saw Me Coming

Good:

Streets of Love

Average filler:

Rain Fall Down (though I'll admit this song has been growing on me)
Look What The Cat Dragged In (my first reaction was very favorable- now I tend to skip)
This Place Is Empty
Infamy (the live version is much better)

Below Average filler (it sucks)

Sweet Neocon

excellent analogy sir,
the difference would be that as a child imagining your kingdom of sea monkeys (i remember the queen even had jewelry)- you were still naive and idealistic enough to EXPECT the majesty of that sea monkey paradise......
with abb - after 20 years of dissolusionment, our expectations were hopeful but realistic - and so the letdown wasn't as catastrophic. i like many songs on abb - but if it had been a complete dissapointment to me (as it was for you), i would have just forgotten about it;
the false promises of the sea monkeys was perhaps the most defining moment of my childhood - i would never again trust the back of my comis, or for that matter my cereal boxes or tv commercials......it was innocence lost.
November 5th, 2005 10:35 PM
exile I thought getting conned into buying sea monkeys was funny. If you cant laugh at your own stupidity what can you laugh at?
