Jaxx Solomon Burke crowns Mick Jagger The King

Is it Sir Mick or King Mick? It's the latter if we go by soul legend Solomon Burke's perception. Burke crowned Mick the King of Rock 'n' Roll at the Wiltern Theatre gig on Monday night.

Burke was opening for The Stones of the LA leg of their tour and joined the band on stage when they covered his 1965 song 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love'. During the duet, Burke's son threw Solomon's trademark cap over Mick's shoulders. The garment has been worn by Burke for over 30 years and worn on shows where he performed for both The Pope and The President.

"I crowned The Rolling Stones 'The True Kings of Rock 'n' Roll' when I gave Mick the golden cloak," says Burke. "Several institutions, including the Smithsonian and the R'n'B Foundation have been after it for years, but I wanted to pass it on to The Stones. They have been spreading the word and awareness of black artists throughout the world for nearly forty years now."

At the Wiltern show, Solomon performed a number of his 60's hits, including "Cry To Me," which was also covered by The Rolling Stones in 1965 on their Out Of Our Heads album.

His latest record is the critically acclaimed 'Don't Give Up On Me' featuring songs written for Burke by Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan.
