Jaxx 'Mick Jagger' talks to us ... well, sort of

By GENE STOUT

You can't always get what you want.

But if you try sometimes, you might find . . . you get what you need.

COMING UP
THE ROLLING STONES AND SHERYL CROW

WHAT: Rock concert

WHEN: Wednesday night at 7:30

WHERE: Tacoma Dome

TICKETS: $50-$300 at Ticketmaster, 206-628-0888 or www.Ticketmaster.com

Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones are on the road with their "Forty Licks" tour -- a 40th anniversary trek that includes a show Wednesday night at the Tacoma Dome with opening act Sheryl Crow.

I had hoped for an interview with the band's swaggering, pouty-lipped lead singer, who usually doesn't have much time for media. The legendary rock musician finally relented, taking a few minutes to talk to the P-I about his famous band and share a bit of rubbish about the group's antics on the road.

Bloody hell he did.

The "Mick" I talked to was actually Vegas E. Trip, the Jagger-esque frontman for San Francisco's Tumblin' Dice, a Rolling Stones tribute band popular in the late-'90s. Trip, who's real name is Vegas Jenkins, is a former standup comic now pursuing an acting career.

In the spirit of "Spinal Tap," Trip agreed to an interview in character as the sassy, smart-mouthed "Mick," complete with pseudo-Cockney accent. I caught up with Trip by phone in San Francisco. He's had a lot of experience portraying Jagger on stage, and he sounded like the real deal:

Q: I trust the Stones tour is going well. Any mishaps so far?

Mick: (Laughs) "Well, Keith was out sunning himself completely nude the other day. So when he's on stage now, he'll let out a little shriek when he moves around. He burnt his privates so badly. So pay attention. If he lets out a noise -- aiyeee! -- or does a little something that's not on key, then it's rubbing against his leather pants there. It's a little inside thing. He didn't want me to tell anybody about it, so nobody knows what's going on there."

Q: Is it still a thrill being on stage after all these years?

Mick: "Well, yeah. Of course it is. I mean, I wouldn't still be doing it, would I? I mean, it's not really for the money. Well, it is for the money. But it's also the only time I really get to exercise. Because I really can't do that at home too much because, well, there's a lot of couches around and I like to lay on them and I don't really move a lot. And plus, I meet a lot of girls. Ya know, it's really nice to meet a lot of girls younger than me. It's not that I need Viagra or anything like that. But it keeps me healthy, I think."

Q: What are your favorite clothes to wear on stage? How much time do you spend on those wild getups?

Mick: "Oh, gawd, Jerry (Hall) used to dress me. I didn't even think about it. I have this team of people, like seamstresses and such. They come up with ideas. But everything has to fit good on my bum, you know, because you've got to have a good-lookin' bum up there on stage (laughs)."

Q: What makes the Stones so popular year after year?

Mick: "I think it's marketing. The marketing people push it out there . . . Naw, just kidding. Of course, it's the music. We write what we love and I think it shows. We get out there and we never stop. The Beatles all like died off -- well, almost-- so who else is going to take the reins? But our deal with the devil ends soon (laughs)."

Q: There's been a lot of talk about that over the years. Is there any truth to it? Did you really sign a pact with the devil?

Mick: "Of course (laughs). No, it's not true. I mean, well, yes, it is. But it's not. You're not going to print that, right? I'm sure we'll get bloody hell from all the religious groups. They'll say, 'See, we knew it all along. Let's burn their records again.' But it really doesn't matter. We've got enough money. We can run the Catholic Church now (laughs nervously)."

Q: A lot of folks think the Stones are over the hill. They complain that you haven't come up with any good songs in years. What do you say to that?

Mick: (Groans) "Ah, you know, there's always your naysayers. These are just people who don't listen to us, obviously. I don't think we've lost any steam at all. I mean, sure, we've gotten a lot older. But, actually we've made so much money now, we actually decided to be 20 years younger. I think we're doing the same thing we've done, only better. If you don't like it, don't listen to it."

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED

"Satisfaction," the Rolling Stones' signature hit, has been covered more times than a pot-luck casserole, so it's hard to pick just the right tracks for the ultimate tribute CD. Your choices may vary, but we chose 12 versions that would seem to constitute an eclectic compilation. From a legendary jazz pianist to Michael J. Fox's co-star on "Family Ties" to the Aussie guy famous for "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," it ought to make one strange party platter, featuring the song stylings of:

Justine Bateman ("Satisfaction" soundtrack, 1988)

Phyllis Diller (Born To Sing, 1967)

Dino, Desi & Billy (I'm a Fool, 1965)

Rolf Harris (70/30, 2000)

Tom Jones (Move Closer, 1989)

Manfred Mann (Soul of Mann, 1967)

Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO Plays Rolling Stones Classic, 1992)

New Renaissance Society (Baroque n' Stones, 1966)

Oscar Peterson (Reunion Blues, 1971)

Bruce Springsteen (All Those Years, 1978)

Vanilla Ice (Extremely Live, 1991)

The Ventures (Ventures A-Go-Go, 1965)

Confession ... Mick Jagger

Jagger: I like TV pop shows
WRINKLY rocker MICK JAGGER says he reckons programmes such as Popstars are great.

In a confession that will amaze his fans, the ROLLING STONES frontman admits to watching and enjoying the glut of telly wannabe shows, saying: Ive watched part of Popstars, Pop Idol and other shows like them.

I find them quite fun. I know some people say they are to blame for wrecking the pop charts but I dont think they are.

Pop stardom is by definition a short-term thing. The public expects pop acts to come and go. Thats why its called pop.

Mick, who is soon to receive his knighthood from the Queen, was speaking just before taking the stage with the band in Los Angeles for the first of three sell-out concerts in the city.

The Stones have now been going strong for an incredible 40 years.

Their Forty Licks tour takes in 27 American cities before the European leg begins early next year.

Rubber-lipped Mick is also winning great reviews in Hollywood at the moment for his acting he plays an escort agency boss in movie drama The Man From Elysian Fields.

gypsy Great interviews! Thanks, Jaxx!

Riffhard Ummm,....Jaxx,that fist interview was not the "real" Mick. You knew that right? I wish that it had been. His answer concerning selling his soul to the devil would have been great for generating more "bad boy" press.
