Topic: Ampeg Sound!! Return to archive

Mathijs L&G,

I hope somebody can answer my questions. I am a devote guitar player and follower of Keith. In my opinion the Stones had the best ever guitar sound on their 1969 tour. As I was yet to be born in 1969, I hope somebody who was there knows:

I know very well that Keith used the 300 watt Ampeg SVT amp, but I have two questions: 1) how did Keith get the amp to produce an overdriven sound (did he just drive it hard? that must have been earbleeding on stage!! 4 SVT's dialed at ten! Or did he use an extra pedal? Did he loop the 2 channels with an Y-cable?), and 2) what PA did the Stones use in 1969? On Gimme Shelter (MSG of course) no PA system (at least no walls of cabinets) can de seen. Were the Ampegs the only amplification for the instruments? How did a Stones show sound back in 1969? Was it loud? I hope somebody can answer my questions!

Mathijs
