Songfacts: This was thought to be about David Bowie's wife, Angela, a friend of Jagger's, but the lyrics suggest it is about his relationship with Marianne Faithful, which ended in turmoil in 1969. Another possibility is that Jagger wrote it for Angela "Dandelion" Richards, daughter of Keith and Anita Pallenberg, born April 17, 1972. (thanks, Bert Van De Kamp - Den Bosch, Netherlands)
A rare ballad for The Stones. Most of their material at the time was hard and aggressive. One of the few Rolling Stones songs that is acoustic. Written almost entirely by Jagger. In the promotional film for this, the other Stones seem disinterested. This was one of the first songs The Stones recorded in Jamaica, where they did most of Goat's Head Soup. In the US, this was the only ballad that hit #1 for The Stones. In 1990, Angela Bowie went on The Joan Rivers Show and claimed she once walked in on David Bowie and Mick Jagger in bed together naked. Jagger and Bowie denied this, but it prompted speculation that Mick wrote this about David Bowie. What's even more shocking is that Rivers had her own talk show. She was quickly replaced by Arsenio Hall.
Comments: Was NOT entirely written by Jagger. Keith wrote all the music, and added the title, which was inspired by his newly born daughter Angela. The strings gave this tune a very uncharacteristic Stonessound.
