T&A "What" is not the question...it's "Who" or, rather "Who Doesn't" Madonna do...

Fiji Joe Pete Townsend?...How many little boys' lunch money did he steal to get on that list?
10-22-03 12:10 PM
KeithRichards210 Shit, what a skewed list THAT is. Sting? Rod Stewart? Gimme a break..Those two are definitely has-beens. I find it hard to imagine Eric up there as well.

Night Clerk Why would Charlie be making half of what Mick and Keith earn? Is this due to songwriting royalties?

I'd say yes! On any Stones CD sold, the share of the songwriters is bigger than that of any of the musicians who played on it. And royalties come not only from CD sales but also rights from radio, TV, movies, live concerts...

How in the Hell does Madonna keep making so damn much money ?

Huh ?!?!?!?!

The same way Monica Lewinsky used to, probably...

Sir Stonesalot I don't know why you are all so surprised by some of the names on that list.

Just because we don't care for some of that schmaltzy shit doesn't mean that all the other fuckwits on the face of the planet don't buy the shit out of that stuff.

Sting will be on that list every year from now till Doomsday...just because of "Every Breath You Take". Rod sells tons of those repackaged "Very Best Of" collections.

I'm very surprised that Bruce wasn't on that list...huge tour, hit album, a couple of nice hot AC radio hit singles. And where is Celine Dion? Didn't that one casino pony up $40 million for her 2 year run? And what about Elvis? I know his earnings are always around $25 million.

I don't understand how this list was compiled. How did they calculate the earnings?

10-22-03 05:53 PM
TheSavageYoungXyzzy I think it's in England only.

Charlie makes a hell of a lotta money on the tours since he's a senior member, but has no writing credits to his name. Ronnie, on the other hand, still has some weird thing worked out with the boys where he doesn't get paid as much.

-tSYX --- Can't buy no thrill...

Shit, SS. Hard to argue there. The recording industry has brainwashed a shitload of people and continues to spoon-feed them that crap. Well they can have it. I'd like to see these corporate bigwigs start pushing that F-Bomb cd. Let's see how the parents like the music industry THEN!!
10-25-03 04:03 PM
Sir Stonesalot Back from the depths of page 2....

You know, I never thought about actually trying to sell these compilations. I wonder how hard it is to get license for songs? Is there a clearing house that you go through? Those "Now" compilations, and "MTV Party To Go" CDs always chart. And those are always filled with crap. I wonder what compilations of really GOOD music would do? You wouldn't figure that it would cost all THAT much to put my compilations...I mean, I usually use fairly obscure material.

Anyone know about these things?
10-25-03 04:27 PM
Zeeta I was speaking to a friend whom works for BMG and she was telling me how they make about 90% of their profit from compilatios such as "hair brush divas" (unbeleivably poorly named). The only thing is the compilations are made up of artists only on that label, as it costs BMG nowt to get them togther, made, marketed and distributed. So I the problem would be that you would have to buy various rights to these records so you could put them onto a complilation. It would costs shitloads to put buy these rights and then you would have to distribute, market etc the products which obviously would be difficult unless you had channels, suppliers, equipment etc that major record companies like BMG already have!

Just my thoughts gimme a critique!

Shame really as 99.9% of compilations are dog poo!
10-25-03 05:05 PM
Sir Stonesalot Of course most compilations are poo...because they are MADE with poo. Now that you mention it, all those compilations ARE label intensive. How much do licensing fees cost?

Why is it so hard to do compilations that DON'T suck? All my compilations are cool...why can't r4ecord labels put cool comps together?
10-26-03 06:40 AM
Zeeta Cos not very many people are cool therefore cool compilations won't sell! Your comps are indeed cool but wouldn't sell to most people as most people suck. Record companies are after people's $ and unfortunately the majority of record buying public are into poomusic, see the above earners list. Apart from artists who have made their from touring (stones macca etc) the rest of the artists, who have made money from record sales eat poo! This is my idea on it anyway,
Matty

So what with the 0.5m difference ?

nankerphelge In order to distribute a sound recording of any band, you'd have to take a license from the record company (as they are typically the owners of the sound recording). You'd have to negotiate the license directly with them or thru an agency, and I'd imagine that the cost would depend on the company/artist/song. They could also withhold permission -- that is, the license is not compulsory.

There is a compulsory license for musical compositions -- that is, if you and your buddies wanted to record Brown Sugar and release it, you could do so without getting permission from Jagger/Richards, as long as you pay them the statutory rate.

10-26-03 12:17 PM
Zeeta Do you wanna 'av a go at Brown Sugar then Nanker!!

Me on the banjo and you on the maracas!!

Would be a hit no shit!
10-26-03 03:25 PM
glencar Rod the Mod had a huge hit with some "Embraceable You" type of redone album. It got slashed by the critics but those without critical faculties slurped it up.
10-26-03 03:30 PM
Gazza >What the hell does Madonna do?

apart from being a major recording artist, she is also the head of a leading record company (Maverick). I would imagine that brings in as much as her record sales do.

10-26-03 06:36 PM
glencar This board does seem kind of duller without SDH. Also, Joey's lack of smilies makes it duller. But I don't miss jb's schtick. Congrats on yer Fish though.

nankerphelge Zeeta! You play the banjo!?
You ain't from West Virginia originally are ya??

I can do maracas -- I actually did do them during Sympathy when the Stones played their Bridges date in DC way back when. (I also snuck in a tambourine for Satisfaction).

"What is it about percussion instruments Ronnie!"

Sir Stonesalot I play a mean zither.
