DOT clears roads for rock, races
Christopher Quinn - Staff
Saturday, October 26, 2002
Racers and rockers should roll without jamming on I-75 and I-85 this weekend.
The Department of Transportation canceled highway work today and Sunday because of two heavyweight traffic makers, NASCAR and the Rolling Stones.
The NAPA 500 will draw those with a need for speed to Atlanta Motor Speedway on today and Sunday. The Rolling Stones will shake their aging booties in the home of the Braves on Saturday night.
"We felt it was just best to get out of the road," the DOT's Mark McKinnon said.
Atlanta Motor Speedway, about 30 miles south of Atlanta, could draw 250,000 people before the final flag drops Sunday, a spokeswoman estimated. Multiple races are scheduled.
The Stones concert could draw as many as 45,000.
McKinnon said the DOT tries to keep an eye out for special events, like holidays, to cancel work. The race was going to create plenty of traffic. The concert was the capper, he said.
