kath eeeyyyyeeewwwwww...the rollerskate song....i gotta go slice my ears off now.....i had successfully blocked that from my memory banks...

what a DREADFUL song!!!

thankfully, the stones never covered it.....( i hope!!)
October 15th, 2004 05:17 PM
gypsy What? That song MADE an otherwise lackluster "Boogie Nights" soundtrack. It would have been nothing without Melanie's contribution.

"I ride my bike. I roller skate. Don't drive no car.
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far.
For somebody who don't drive, I've been all around the world.
Some people say I done all right for a girl."

And, on that note, I am going to roller skate myself all the way to Nebraska to see joey. I asked his mother if he was at home, she said yeah, but he wasn't alone. So now I think he's cheating. Gotta go.

corgi37 Winning Ugly. Worst song in history, and not just Stones song. Worst ever.

Yep, even Kajagoogoo wouldnt have put this crap on their (what, 1???) album.

it could have been a cool bluesy tune without all this electronic bullshit!

agree on "winning ugly", great synthe riff anyway!!
October 18th, 2004 08:36 AM
JumpingKentFlash That's an easy one: Might as Well Get Juiced.

....And I can't understand why people (in general) keep bashing Voodoo Lounge. It's one of their best IMO. Not a single really bad track on it. Sparks Will Fly is the best on there, and one of the best ever.

Hi Kent
Agree on sparks will fly, I love the whole album, closed beautifully by "mean disposition", a great classic underrated IMHo...

Wouldnt go that far. I think most people like Voodoo Lounge OK, although calling "Sparks will fly" one of their best songs ever is a stretch.

Its a decent rocker but it does contain what is probably the worst lyrical couplet ever in any Stones song - ie when Mick uses "sharks will cry" to rhyme with the song's title.
October 18th, 2004 09:59 AM
Jumacfly So have you ever seen a shark crying is the real question
may be they saw that in Bahamas..
October 18th, 2004 10:53 AM
JumpingKentFlash What the heck Gazza my man. You don't get the "Sharks Will Cry" line?????? It means that now that Jagger has the girl (and presumably porkin' her) the other guys (Sharks) can't have her because he is so good at porking. I swear that's what it means. A great great song. In top 20 of their best clearly. If you wanna hear stupid lines I could go:
Yeah, you should be mine, mine, whew
Yes, you could be mine
Tonight and every night
I will be your knight in shining armour
Coming to your emotional rescue
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
I will be your knight in shining armour
Riding across the desert with a fine Arab charger

or:
Hey mama
What's this crazy game of sevens, eights and nines
I can't keep up with you baby
I'm gonna give you such a piece of my mind
When I get around to it
'Cause honey I'm abused
Might as well get juiced

or:
Get out and ride on, baby, ride on, baby
Ride on, baby, ride on, baby
I could pick your face out in an FBI file
You may look pretty but I can't say the same for your mind
Ah ah ah

or:
Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up

Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up

Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up
Pretty beat up

or:
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
She's nailed you to the wall
Oh, it's a shame
Ah but it's funny
She crashed your car
She spend your money
And you can't get away from it all

or:
The old maid is roughing up
Applying final touches
Even though she's late for the dance
I tell you tonight she's really gonna have a ball
She's gonna really tie me up
She's gonna really tie me up
She's gonna really tie me up
She's gonna really tie me up
She's gonna really tie me up
Why so divine the pain of love

or:
I wanna be on top
Forever on the up
And damn the competition
I never play it fair
I never turn a hair
Just like the politicians
I wrap my conscience up
I wanna win that cup
And get my money baby
But back in the dressing room
The other side is weeping
And we're winning, winning ugly
And we're winning, winning ugly

And we're heading for the heartbreak
Heading for the blues
We're heading for the heartbreak
Heading for the blues
And we're winning, winning ugly
And we're winning, winning ugly

I will not act unkind
I will not be so blind
I will not walk so proud
Come down from off my cloud
How can I live my life this way?
Beauty is staring me in the face
Ain't that the truth
Ain't that the truth
Hold on, come on girl
Hold on

Look out for number one
My country right or wrong
Let the devil take the hindmost
I was brought up to cheat
So long as the referee wasn't looking
I'm never wrong at all
I always fight the call
I don't admit it
But back in the dressing room
The other side is screaming
And we're winning, winning ugly, yeah
And we're winning, winning ugly

And we're heading for the heartbreak
Heading for the blues
We're heading for the heartbreak
Heading for the blues
And we're winning, winning ugly

I will not act unkind
I will not be so blind
I will not walk so proud
Come down from off my cloud
How can I live my life this way
Beauty is staring me in the face
Ain't that the truth
Ain't that the truth?
Come on baby, come on girl
A little bit louder
Walk a little bit prouder

And we're winning, winning ugly, that's alright
And we're winning, winning ugly, come on girl
And we're winning, winning ugly
And we're winning, winning ugly, winning ugly

or last but not least:
Living high, sitting in the sun
Sit on your ass till your work is done
You lazy mother, your hands are clean
You pull the strings and you got the clout
There's something filthy living in your mouth
Pushing your buttons you get away free

You let somebody do the dirty work
Find some loser, find some jerk
Find some dumb ass do it all for free
Let somebody do the dirty work
Find some loser, find some jerk
Find some greaseball, yeah

It's beginning to make me angry
I'm beginning to hate it
You're a user, you're a user
I'm gonna shake you

Let somebody do the dirty work
I never see no grease on you baby
Never roll your sleeves up, do you, never baby
Let somebody do the dirty work
Find some fucker, find some jerk
Do it all, do it all for free

While you're out having all the fun
They'll take the blame when the trouble comes
Let somebody do it, do it

It's beginning to make me angry
I'm beginning to hate you
You're a user, I hate you
When you push you make me crazy

Let somebody do it all for free
Let somebody do the dirty work
Let somebody do it all for free
Let somebody do the dirty work
Let somebody do the dirty work
Pushing it harder, pushing it harder

Sparks Will Fly outplays all of these and many, many more.

glencar You think the lyrics to Tie You Up(Pain of LOve) are worse than Sparks Will Fly? I realize it's just an opinion but I must completely disagree with it. VL was one of their worst albums & Sparks is the biggest clunker on it. Pain of Love is a beautiful piece of funky blues. The lyrics on the paper may not be to your liking but the song rocks.
October 18th, 2004 07:03 PM
JumpingKentFlash I think it's sucky. A little too "Paul-McCartney-1980" for me.
SWF is great. VL is in the top ten of their albums. And B2B on spot 10 for that matter. I have this rating:

1.- SF.
2.- EOMS.
3.- BB.
4.- LIB.
5.- B&B.
6.- SG.
7.- OOOH.
8.- VL.
9.- Aftermath.
10.- BTBabylon.
11.- IORR.
12.- GHS.
13.- DC (AE).
14.- SW.
15.- TY.
16.- TRS: ENH.
17.- Undercover.
18.- BTButtons.
19.- SMR.
20.- DW.

That's my opinion anyway.

Its not that I dont "get it", Kent. (English is my first language after all ;-))

I've never heard anyone come off with that expression before or since in my life. Its simply invented for the sake of fitting a rhyme. And a hideous, clumsy rhyme it is, too.

Theres nothing wrong with those other lyrics. Poetry they're not, but rock n roll lyrics for the most part arent meant to be looked at on the same level as Wordsworth or Keats. People would use those expressions in common parlance. NO ONE in the history of the English language has ever said "sharks will cry" outside the context of that bloody song. I've researched this and it's true.

glencar The lyric sucks & so does Jagger's phrasing. The music for SWF is actually pretty good. Shame about the lyrics & singing.

Soldatti Sparks will fly is a great tune and the first 5 songs on Voodoo Lounge are the best string of songs since Some Girls (b-side)
