Topic: Rolling Stones SACDs Coming to Europe and Canada Return to archive
10-21-02 11:03 PM
CS After a successful launch in the U.S., the Rolling Stones Remastered SACD series are scheduled to arrive in Europe and Canada in the next week or so. As with the U.S. release, the actual store dates will depend on when Universal Music International receives sufficient stock of the 22 albums for sale.

According to the Universal Music International and Universal Music Canada labels which are handling the distribution of the SACDs outside of the US, the discs should arrive in the European markets starting on October 21st and in Canada shortly thereafter. (For example, Amazon.Com's overseas web sites show the discs arriving in the U.K. on October 21st and in France on October 28th while the HMV.Com Canada web site shows the discs arriving in Canada on October 29th).

The release of the Rolling Stones Remastered SACDs in Europe and Canada will follow the U.S. rollout done by ABKCO Records almost completely. In fact, the press announcement materials are essentially the same as those we saw in advance of the August release in the U.S. with the exception of the release dates and label names (in Europe the discs will appear on the Decca label instead of the ABKCO Records label).

As with the U.S. release, the Rolling Stones Remastered SACDs will appear in the paperboard "Digipak" cases with a 2002 copyright date and the "Rolling Stones Remastered Series" sticker. Those will be the indicators SACD fans will need to look for when searching for these SACDs on record store shelves.

Sales of the Rolling Stones Remastered SACDs in the US
While on the topic of the Rolling Stones Remastered SACDs, I thought it would be interesting to see how the discs were doing sales-wise in the U.S. market.

According to Bob Merlis, spokesman for ABKCO Records, "ABKCO is delighted with the retail response to the Rolling Stones Remastered Series and it's quite clear that if the production backlog were not as it is, overall sales would be higher. In September, there were four Rolling Stones Remastered titles on Billboard's catalog chart at once (plus another 6 within Soundscan's catalog listings beyond that). It's an exceptionally strong showing for a rerelease series of this type."

With the verdict in from the US, it will be interesting to see how strong the sales of the Stones SACDs are when they arrive in Europe and Canada. We'll have to wait and see.

Lazy Bones Some smaller music stores here in Canada already carry them as imports. Locally (Kitchener), they're available for $30 (Cdn) ea for the single discs.

corgi37 Funny you should say. remastered only released in Oz last week. havent got any yet, but Beggars, Let it bleed, and Metamorohasis are the ones i want. Trouble is, if any tracks in Beggars are mono, forget it. Funnily, no mention of sacd here, which doesnt mean it isnt, but i wouldnt be surprised if its not. sacd just doesnt mean a thing here yet.
