Beatles named 'icons of century'
BBC
The Beatles have beaten jazz star Louis Armstrong and TV actress Lucille Ball to be named icons of the century by readers of US magazine Variety.
It named the Liverpool band "the sole group who has most shaped the face of modern-day showbusiness".
The magazine ranked 100 iconic entertainment figures from the last 100 years, with industry figures drawing up a shortlist that readers voted on.
What a Wonderful World singer Armstrong came second, with Ball in third place.
Among the criteria for choosing "icons" were their commercial and creative impact, number of imitators, enduring appeal and whether they appeared on T-shirts.
ICONS OF THE CENTURY
1. The Beatles
2. Louis Armstrong
3. Lucille Ball
4. Humphrey Bogart
5. Marlon Brando
6. Charlie Chaplin
7. James Dean
8. Marilyn Monroe
9. Mickey Mouse
10. Elvis Presley
Source: Variety magazine
The list aimed to represent every side of showbusiness, including actors, directors, screenwriters, musicians, TV presenters, animals, comedians and even cartoon characters.
However, its top 10 was dominated by Hollywood and music stars.
Despite the constant popularity of the late singer's work, Elvis Presley appeared in 10th place, below Marilyn Monroe and Mickey Mouse.
Among other names on the list were US TV host Johnny Carson, singer Johnny Cash and canine star Lassie.
Variety conducted the poll to mark its 100th anniversary. It did not reveal how many votes were cast.

What an odd list.
If you are ranking 20th century iconic status, Elvis is #1. Period. It's not even close. |

Chaplin should be #1 imo. The image of the "Little Tramp" is just about one of the two or three most instantly recognizable images in the world.

Chaplin Chaplin Chaplin
Chaplin's fame really is incomparable to anyone else. The Beatles and Elvis are famous, but Chaplin was known to everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE around the world. This is simply because he was a silent movie star. Silent movies were just about as close to a universal artform as one could get because there was no language barrier (you only had to change the title cards to the appropriate language, no dubbing or subtitles) or social/class barrier. Anyone and everyone could enjoy a silent film. Thus, stars such as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Harold Lloyd and others became for more internationally famous entertainers than anyone before or sense. And at the top of them all was Chaplin, whose image is just about the most famous image of an entertainer in the world.
(BTW, Gershwin should be in the top ten as well). |

Elvis.
Period.
The Beatles further developed his schtick, with a Brit accent to boot - but Elvis was the Alpha and the Omega.
Yeah, he was heavily influenced by a mood and tone that was already established, but that fact went unheard for the most part by lil ol white kids until Elvis broke their cherries.
Elvis is #1.
It isn't even close.
And a 20th century icon list w/o Frank Sinatra???? WTF????
A joke of a list if ever there was one. |

No, pavlov, I think he means the OTHER Aleister Crowley: the English occult genius and author of "Magick in Theory and Practice," "Little Essays Toward Truth" and other instructive works.
Do you say "Crowley"
To rhyme with "holy,"
Or is it "Crowley"
To rhyme with "foully"? |

I figured Sinatra and Crosby would be on the list. Maybe even Jolson. What about Dame Nellie Melba?
I agree John Holmes should be on there, and maybe even Ron Jeremy. But to leave off the trifecta of Tracey Lords and Ginger & Amber Lynn is unforgiveable. |

but forget reagan who, IMHO, merely took personal credit for an historical inevitability - mohammed ali easily takes his place
picasso also deserves a mention |

indeed, when archeologist 1,000 years from now are combing through the uncovered ruins of the 20th century (that is to say society as we know it) they will have no alternative but to conclude that this (elvis) was some kind of diety - tupelo is the new bethlehem |
