Ten Thousand Motels Dave Mason (founding member of Traffic) to Inaugurate 'Doctors of Rock' Series at San Francisco's Renowned Academy of Art University

Dave Mason (founding member of Traffic) is going to inaugurate "Doctors of Rock" Series at San Francisco's Renowned Academy of Art University. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason is the first artist to be honored as San Francisco's celebrated Academy of Art University kicks off its "Doctors of Rock" Honorary Doctorate Series with a gala event on Tuesday, October 19. In addition to having the great distinction of being the inaugural "Doctor of Rock," Mason will also perform that evening. The ceremony and concert take place at 7PM on the University campus at 491 Post Street, San Francisco, and the press reception will begin at 5PM in the lobby.

"Doctors of Rock" was conceived to recognize legendary artists, musicians and instrument designers for their significant contributions to the art and design industry. The University -- established in 1929 and now the nation's largest accredited art school -- is bringing music into its curriculum so students can experience its profound interconnection to the visual arts. Also being honored on October 19 is Ravi Sawhney, co-founder with Mason of RKS Guitars, "dedicated to pushing the envelope of design of electric guitars ... instruments that capture the spirit of music and provide a lifetime of enjoyment."

Born in Worcester, U.K., Dave Mason's stellar career began when Steve Winwood disbanded the Spencer Davis Group and joined Mason, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood in forming the groundbreaking band Traffic in 1967. Mason lent his guitar wizardry and songwriting gifts to the now-legendary group -- his "Feelin' Alright" is a true rock anthem -- and was inducted with Traffic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Dave Mason went on to solo stardom in 1970 with his stellar debut album Alone Together. It delivered the signature hit "Only You Know And I Know," and featured all-star collaborators including Leon Russell, Jim Capaldi, Rita Coolidge, and Delaney & Bonnie, who went on to have a #1 record with the song. The classic disc is one of the first albums featured in XM Satellite Radio's new Original Series "Then Again Live," where artists are invited to recreate their landmark LPs in sequence, onstage before a live audience. Solo highlights include the three gold albums Alone Together, Dave Mason, and Mariposa De Oro, along with the Let It Flow, which contained the Top 10 single "We Just Disagree." From 1994-1996, Mason toured the world as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Today, he is touring and recording with his own band, and is at work on a forthcoming solo album.
