Saint Sway I've been understandably reading that many die hards are already dissapointed in the forthcoming live CD

but, us die hards aside, do you think this is something that the average rock and roll fan will enjoy?

and is it something that the average music fan will pick up and think that its awesome?

I know most die hard Stones fans would never list Forty Licks or Hot Rocks as their must own CDs but I know a lot of people who are R&R fans but not necassarily Stones freaks who swear by those CDs. And I'm thinking that the avg fan might view Live Licks in the same vane

mac_daddy OT: saint sway - did you ever get those discs i sent you..?

jb No..the Live Licks performances are in no way reflective of how great this band once was....Jagger sounds too polished and too deep a voice, the guitars suck, and quite frankly, it doesn't sound that good....

Jagger's singing better in concert than he ever has.

and theres nothing regarding the sound of the guitars that cant be fixed with a bit of mixing or overdubbing.

To get back to the original question. Yeah, there'll be a few casual fans out there who'll enjoy the album on it's own merits (technically speaking, the performances are probably just fine) and who won't care about the duplication of songs from the DVD or the bizarre timing of the CD's release. Although I doubt there'll be enough of them to make it a huge seller.

I thought Still Luife sucked and that was 81...Flashpoint was average at best, No Security the worst piece of crap ever and I based on the 4 flicks dvd, this album should really suck big time...(I will say Stripped was o.k.).

Saint Sway what I'm hoping is that Live Licks - esp side 2 - will expose the casual fan to some of the Stones deeper tracks. Far too many fans at Stones shows that only own Forty Licks or Hot Rocks and only know those songs. Hopefully this cd will familiarize them with some cooler material.

I dont know too many people that own "Love You Live" or some of the other live Stones cds. Hopefully this one sells and people dig it.

we all have our favorite boots to go back and listen to. I just hope people pick up this album and it becomes a vehicle to expose them to more Stones

(MacDaddy, I got your Rich & Chris Robinson discs. Thanks! You taped those eh? good job!!)

95% agreed. Stripped was OK but could have been better if they had used the raw live versions (black limousine, all down the line, gimme shelter, live with me) which they now used as B-sides. (The best Stones songs are mostly found on B-sides nowadays.)

Soldatti Stripped was great, Flashpoint more or less and No Security not was a good idea, this album not is so so bad.
Live Licks will be a Love You Live Pt. 2: 1/3 very good, 1/3 average and 1/3 sucks.
October 12th, 2004 04:08 AM
Monkeytonkman I swear I'm the only person alive who really likes No Security - everyone else ranks it as a piece of crap.

Of all the official live albums, this is the one I've listened to most over the last few years,

Quite frankly my dear I think it rocks! so Yah boo to the rest of ya!
October 12th, 2004 04:43 AM
erikjjf No Security could have been a lot better if it had been more reflective of the B2B tour. For instance, opening with Satisfaction followed by Let's Spend The Night Together rather than a cruise control You Got Me Rocking. Some website songs such as Under My Thumb, She's A Rainbow, Starfucker. Keith including All About You and Wanna Hold You rather than Thief In The Night. The Last Time being accompanied by Little Queenie and Crazy Mama for the b-stage set. Memory Motel butchered by Dave Matthews could have been replaced by the version from MSG....

Gazza I dont think its too bad, either, actually, although I havent listened to it in a while.

"Out of control" and "Saint of me" are especially great on it and "Respectable" rocks like a bastard.

Sales-wise though, it sank like a stone (if you excuse the pun) even with a 35 date sell-out American tour going on sale a week after it came out. It was the worst seller of the band's career and proved to most people that if even the Rolling Stones cant sell what was a pretty decent live album whose release coincided with a tour, then there wasnt reaklly much point in such a venture in future.
October 12th, 2004 05:29 AM
Jumping Jack For a bunch that is supposed to be so business savvy they sure make a lot of dumb mistakes. The Stones should simply sell a soundboard of a complete show. Start with Cleveland or Roseland.
October 12th, 2004 08:26 AM
justinkurian What would be cool...if the Stones were to release every show from the Licks tour. I'm curious how many would buy a complete set?

The Who have done that on recent tours (with all the proceeds going to charity, mind you)...along with others including Pearl Jam. I don't know how the Who's discs sell because they don't go through traditional retail outlets, but the Pearl Jam discs sold well the first time they did it.

But, I doubt the Stones would ever do something like that...perhaps on the last go 'round, the final cash-in.

I disagree, he sounded not just better...amazing on the 89/90 tour, since then his voice declined.

You're SOOOO RIGHT! ....how AAY and Wanna Hold You lose against Thief i'll never understand and Corinna is the ugliest song ever
October 12th, 2004 10:16 AM
Gazza Mick's onstage singing has been far better from 1989 onwards than ever before since he learned how to pace himself properly and not get breathless running around a massive stage and barking out the vocals while he concentrated more on wiggling his arse and pouting for two full hours every night (a la 1976)

I also maintain that on the Licks tour he carried the band more than ever before. They all had their moments on that tour (especially Charlie who was consistent as always) but Mick was "MVP" by a fucking mile throughout 2002-2003.

Thing was, the Who 2003 tour was quite short (maybe 18 shows or so) and the Pearl Jam one a few years ago was only about 25 shows I believe. The last Stones tour had about 117 shows!

Would there be a market for it? Absolutely. Maybe there would only be a few who'd buy EVERY show but with the size of crowds that the Stones attract, they could easily make it a winner by advertising it at the show in question will well-positioned flyers as well as online. Almost everyone comes out of a Stones show thinking "Id love to hear that show again" but few have the means of doing so. And CDs like that could be mass produced with minimal overheads, as The PJ and Who ones were.

The Who ones sold for about 15. The average 2-CD bootleg here would sell for about 25 minimum, maybe 30. And many of them arent soundboards and hardly any would be properly mixed soundboards either. By putting something like this out via a specialist online store, they could make a lot of money and make a terrific gesture to their fanbase at the same time.

It seems unlikely the Stones would do this: think of all the overdubs!!

What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
what will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.

Gazza, were you referring to the Who official boots? Not sure what you meant, but the Who were soundboards.
October 12th, 2004 11:37 AM
Gazza No, I meant the Stones shows that you can buy as bootlegs - although I can see that the way I phrased that is easily misinterpreted.

The Who shows are all soundboards and properly mixed ones at that. I have the Birmingham show, which I was at.

Gazza, can you send me the soundboard recording of Mick's rendition of Alfie? Thanks Mr. Goldberg!
