UK AND AMERICA MUST ALWAYS STAND TOGETHER, SAYS JERRY
Sunday 16 September 2001 9:54pm
Jerry Hall has spoken of the importance of the "special relationship" between Britain and America.
The actress was addressing a vigil at Westminster Abbey for the thousands of victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks.
Hall said her daughter Elizabeth had witnessed one of the atrocities in New York.
"She was getting out of a taxi and looked up to see a plane going into the World Trade Centre."
The American-born celebrity said the US had stood by Britain while it was blitzed during the war, and Britain was now standing by the US after the terror attacks.
"That is what the special relationship means. Let us always stand together," she told the congregation, which included her ex-husband Mick Jagger and the US ambassador William Farish.
Nicholas Bailey, who plays Dr Truman in EastEnders, said Martin Luther King, the murdered civil rights leader, had once urged people to resist their natural desire for revenge.
Singer Mica Paris gave a rendition of Amazing Grace.
The service was attended by representatives of Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist faiths. Dr Wesley Carr, Dean of Westminster Abbey, spoke of his hopes for peace and reconciliation.
"Who can know what will unfold, but we can all pray that the aim may be reconciliation that the means may be talk and that the end will be the healing of relations between people, races, religions and nations."
