British Songwriters Honoured for Success in USA

By Sherna Noah, Showbusiness Correspondent, PA News

The British songwriters who penned the hits which have dominated American radio play were being honoured in a ceremony tonight.

The Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) Awards salute the songs which have received more than two million airplays on American radio and TV.

Paul McCartney and John Lennons Yesterday came top of the list with a total of eight million airplays since its release in 1976.

John Lennons Imagine has received five million airplays, as has Born Free by John Barry, the music penned for the movie of the same name.

The BMI is responsible for collecting royalties for music broadcast in the US.

It works on behalf of around 10,000 British writers and publishers and holds the biggest database of airplay enjoyed by British writers in the US.

Elton Johns Candle in the Wind, Tears for Fears Everybody Wants to Rule the World, the Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Women, and Gerry Raffertys Baker Street all have four million airplays.

The ceremony, in Londons Dorchester Hotel, also named All the Things She Said, sung by Russian duo Tatu, College Song of the Year.

Van Morrison was being honoured for his enduring influence on generations of music makers.

The Who guitarist Pete Townshend received the Pop Award for Behind Blue Eyes.

Canadian artist Shania Twains Forever and For Always was named Song of the Year.
