GENEVA (AFP) - The Rolling Stones will appear in what should be the last gig of their 40th anniversary world tour in Zurich, but the band may still play in China where all concerts were cancelled due to SARS (news - web sites).
The legendary rockers, led by singer Mick Jagger (news), who unwittingly featured in a fake interview by a Swiss newspaper this week, will perform to a sell-out crowd of 42,500 people at the Swiss city's Letzigrund Stadium.
It was the final phase of their European leg, but the veteran band was still discussing whether to try their luck again in Asia after being forced to pull out of the region early following the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), a spokesperson in New York said.
"Discussions are definitely underway," the spokesperson told AFP by telephone.
"When I am told there will definitely be a gig then I will be able to give a definite answer."
Promoters last month said final preparations were being made to bring the veteran rockers to China for the first time in November.
The band, which also includes Keith Richards (news), Ronnie Woods and Charlie Watts (news), had originally been scheduled to perform in Shanghai on April 1 and Beijing on April 4 as part of their their Forty Licks world tour.
They have never played in China despite applying regularly for permission since the 1970s, and they have made clear it is high on their list of priorities.
