It's okay, FPM, I found myself listening to "Lose Yourself" in my car on the way to work yesterday...it's very motivating. Don't tell anyone...it's, like, a guilty pleasure. |

Yeah, it's actually a really good song. As rap moves toward having melodies and structure, it starts to sound almost like music. I thought Eminem and 50 Cent were both ok on that last MTV show.
I wouldn't go out and buy any of their shiznit, though. |

Yeah...I do think Eminem is very sharp and witty with his lyrics...although I tend to frown upon rapping about "baby mama drama." |

YIKES! Two of my favorite posters diggin' Eminem. Its a sad day to be black and drunk on this board.
----
All the usual stuff:
Anything on Dre's The Chronic - just a great album. Classic, whether you like rap or not.
Ice Cube - Bop Gun (Funkadelic cover), You Know How We Do It, It Was a Good Day, Dead Homiez, Once Upon a Time in the Projects, Its a Man's World. Ice Cube is my fav.
Ice-T - I'm Your Pusher, Original Gangster
NWA - Express Yourself
Public Enemy - Fight The Power, Pollywanacraka, Nighttrain, 1 Million Bottlebags
Snoop - Nuthin But A G Thang, Gin and Juice, Murder was the Case
But that baddest ass rap song of all time? DJ Quick's Can't Fuck With a Nigga - some of the finest lyrics this side of Dylan ("Little white boy how the fuck you figure, Nah you can't fuck with a Compton nigga" and "Your white is showing like Belinda Carlyle"). Check it, bleeeeeds..... |

Promiscuous by Frank Zappa:
The Surgeon General, Doctor Koop
S’posed to give you all the poop
But when he’s with PMRC
The poop he’s scoopin’ amazes me.
C-Span showed him, all dressed up
In his phony Doctor God get up,
He looked in the camera and fixed his specs
‘N gave a fascinating lecture ‘bout anal sex.
Anal Sex!
He says it is not good for us
We just can’t be promiscuous
He’s a doctor-he should know
It’s the work of the devil so girls don’t blow
Don’t blow (x2)
Don’t blow Jimmy, don’t blow Bobby,
Get yourself another hobby
If Jesus practiced medicine
I’m sure he’d do it just like him.
Is Dr. Koop a man to trust?
It seems at least that Reagan must
But Ron’s a trusting sort of guy
He trust’s Ed Meese, I wonder why?
I wonder why (x2)
The AMA has just got caught
For doin stuff it shouldn’t ought
All they do is lie and lie
Where’s Dr. Koop? He’s standing by
Surgeon General? What’s the deal?
Is your epidemic real?
Are you leaving something out?
Something we can’t talk about?
A little green monkey over there
Kills a million people? That’s not fair.
Did it really go that way? Did you ask the CIA?
Would they take you serious, or have they been promiscuous?
Have they been promiscuous? (x3)

You, my young friend, are now my favorite!! That is one rap song that kicks ass.
The rest, gotta agree with Greg Allman: "Rap is short for crap."

"No Sleep Til Brooklyn"-Beastie Boys

"A Day In The Life"-The Beatles
"Spiral Staircase"-Kings Of Leon
"Hand Springs"-The White Stripes

Ironically, DJ Quick's Can't F With A Nigga spends much of its time dissing House of Pain's "Jump". Its quite humorous. "little Irish faggot....thats why you jump around" and other digs at Everlast.
Bottom line is you can't F with a Compton N. Well you can, its technically within your rights, but I highly recommend not doing so. F'in' with a Compton N, that is. That is what I highly recommend not doing. F o' N. |

Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp
A Toon!
Hope everyone is well here at RO!! |

Sir Stonesalot |
I forgot about....
"2 Nigs United For West Compton"-Prince
Actually, anything from The Black Album.
So Moonie...you don't think DJ Quick was dissin' Everlast because he was afraid white guy rappers would come in and sell records to all the suburban white kids and poor DJ Quick would be stuck huckin' CDs out of the trunk of his car to the ghetto kids that can part with enough crack money to buy one?
Or am I overthinking that one? |
|
sirmoonie |
I think DJ Quick just hates whitey. Especially Irish east coast whitey.
Hey, don't get mad at me! I liked Jump Around. I jump around alot when I'm all liquored up. I like Everlast too.
But to answer your question, I suppose some black rappers fear that the Eminems of the world will take the market share and increase their verbal attacks accordingly. |

The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five...A great rap song and one that the Stones could have done really well to. |

When i was 12 i bought my first single. It was "Gangstas Paridise" by Coolio. So i guess that will always stick in my mind. I like "Express Yourself" by N.W.A and a couple of the 50 Cent tunes are okay.
Incidently, he played his first full UK show last week at Wembley Arena. You had to go through a metal detector!
