Stones can't dethrone Elvis on charts

By JOHN WILLIAMS -- JAM! Showbiz

This week's chart results will have Canadian
music lovers checking the calendar to see what
decade they're in.

The Elvis Presley compilation "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits"
managed to ward off a strong debut from rival
Rolling Stones' compilation "Forty Licks," to
take top spot on the Canadian album charts,
according to data compiled by Nielsen
SoundScan.

"Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" held the top spot in the
country on sales of 49,200, while "Forty Licks"
stormed into second with sales of 35,500.

Canadian jazz great Diana Krall cracked the
charts in third with her live album "Live In Paris"
(15,400). Fellow Canuck Avril Lavigne's "Let
Go" (13,200) sank from third to fourth and the
compilation "Now!7" (10,800) dropped one spot
to fifth.

Blue Rodeo's ninth studio effort "Palace Of
Gold" (8,720) and music from the TV show
"American Idol" (8,700) debuted in sixth and
seventh respectively. Peter Gabriel's "Up"
(8,600) fell to eighth, after entering in second
last week and Eminem's "The Eminem Show"
(7,800) and Nelly's "Nellyville" (7,400) both
slipped one notch to ninth and tenth.

Other notable chart movement included Beck's
"Sea Change," which tumbled down from fifth
last week to 16th this week. LeAnne Rimes'
latest effort "Twisted Angel" debuted at No. 12,
Bet E. And Stef's "Day By Day" entered at No.
14 and Good Charlotte's "The Young And The
Hopeless" checked in at No. 25.

In The U.S., the story was the same as "Elvis:
30 #1 Hits" stayed on top on sales of 336,600,
while "Forty Licks" followed close behind in
second with sales of 309,800. Hip-hop star
Xzibit debuted in third with "Man vs. Machine"
(156,000), "American Idol" (146,100) checked
in at No. 4 and the Dixie Chicks rounded out
the top five with "Home" (130,400).
