Mick Jagger
Mick Jagger is a living embodiment of Rock 'n' Roll

Mick Jagger laughed off comparisons between himself and notorious film character Alfie Elkins at a press conference in New York yesterday.

The Stones frontman and producer/songwriter Dave Stewart were on hand to talk about their contribution to the forthcoming "Alfie" soundtrack, starring Jude Law in the playboy character made famous by Michael Caine in the 1966 original:

"The Alfie character, who doesn't want to commit, is a character that's come up again and again in literature over the last three or four hundred years," Jagger said.

"I think it's a stock character, a character inside all young men - and young women. There aren't any playboys anymore. They wrap themselves around trees in badly driven sports cars. I've always been very business-minded."

Full details of the music soundtrack have now been revealed, with three original tracks - "Old Habits Die Hard," "Blind Leading the Blind" and "Let's Make It Up" - included on the album.

Jagger also revealed he enjoyed the limitations of writing for film:

"You don't have complete freedom: Each song is written around a specific catch, really disciplined," he said. "You're still writing rock or pop songs, but you have to get it right for the scene. Dave and I are really precise."

"We always wanted someone to do the Alfie song, but we didn't know who," added Jagger, talking about the movie's famous title track. "There are seventy-six versions of it," said Stewart, "mostly cabaret-style. So we stripped it down -- and Joss [Stone] got it in two takes!"

Jagger also discussed the heath of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who recently underwent treatment for throat cancer:

"He's had all these treatments and he was pronounced free and clear. So we're very glad about that."
