Topic: Red Sox: fading fast? Return to archive Page: 1 2

Starbuck can the twins sweep the sox for the remainder of the weekend? tune in to find out...we basically fielded our AA squad at fenway last night and came away with the win versus your ace...what gives? garret jones goes yard against josh beckett? lecroy behind the plate and you can't win? oh yeah: who the hell is garret jones? even i don't know...

pitiful.

hell of an ending though...

that being said, the twins still have a chance to finish .500!

ShaneJazz Don't worry about the Red Sox. They're in the playoffs. Neither the Yankee$ or the Sox are truly worried about winning the division. Just get in and then try to do some damage. It's the Mets that are fading to black. Potentially a collapse for the ages.

My Mets-loving friend isn't answering the phone. I'm nervously concerned. 2 weeks ago, it looked like the Yankees were on the way out & the Mets were solid. What a shame.

It's positively Bucknerian the way they are blowing it! The flip side is that there may be a 4 way tie for the wild card. . .craziness!
28th September 2007 04:20 PM
glencar 4 way tie? How would they settle THAT?
28th September 2007 04:28 PM
monkey_man A series of one game elimination games I guess. . .

Here's the NL and AL scenarios from mlb.com:
If there's a four-way tie among the Mets, Phillies, D-Backs and Padres:
• The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.
• The Friars and Snakes would go at it Monday in Arizona for the NL West crown.
• Monday's losing teams would play Tuesday to decide the Wild Card. The Diamondbacks would have to go to Philly or New York. The Padres would either host the Phils or travel to New York. If the Rockies were in the mix here, they'd host either way.

If there's a four-way tie among the Mets, Phillies, Rockies and Padres:
• The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.
• The Rox and Friars would go at it Monday in San Diego for the NL West crown.
• Monday's losing teams would play Tuesday to decide the Wild Card. The Rockies would host either Philly or New York. The Padres would host the Phillies, but play at the Mets.

Here are some other more traditional scenarios:
If the Mets and Phillies finish tied atop the East: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Philly's Citizens Bank Park.

If the Cubs and Brewers finish in a tie atop the Central: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Chicago's Wrigley Field.

If the D-backs and Padres finish in a tie atop the West: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Arizona's Chase Field.

If the Rockies and Padres finish in a tie atop the West: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at San Diego's PETCO Park.

If the Padres and Phillies finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at PETCO.

If the Padres and Rockies finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Colorado's Coors Field.

If the Phillies and Rockies finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Coors Field.

It's also possible that more than one game will be needed to break a tie.

If the Padres, Rockies and Phillies finish in a three-way tie for the Wild Card: The head-to-head records among the three teams would be used to designate each club as A, B or C. The club with the best such record would have the first choice, the club with the second-best record would have the second choice, and the club with the worst record among the three would get the remaining option.

• The Phillies went 4-3 vs. the Padres and 3-4 vs. the Rockies (7-7 overall).
• The Rockies went 10-8 vs. the Padres and 4-3 vs. the Phillies (14-11 overall).
• The Padres went 8-10 vs. the Rockies and 3-4 vs. the Phillies (11-14 overall).

Thus, the Rockies would have the first choice to be designated as club A, B or C. The Phillies would have the second choice. The Padres would get the remaining option, and the games would then be played as follows. A hosts B on Monday, with the winner hosting C on Tuesday.

If the Red Sox and Yankees finish the regular season tied: The Yankees will be declared the division winners based on their 10-8 advantage over the Red Sox in their season series.

If the Indians and Red Sox finish in a tie for best record in the league: Boston, which beat Cleveland, 5-2, in the season series, gets the nod.

If the Indians and Angels finish in a tie: The teams split 10 games during the regular season, so it'll go to the second tie-breaker, based on division records. The Indians are currently 46-23 (.667) against the AL Central and the Angels are 30-21 (.588) against the AL West, so the advantage would go to the Tribe.

If the Red Sox and Angels finish in a tie: Advantage Boston, based on winning six of 10 against the Halos this season.

If the Indians, Angels and Red Sox all finish in a tie: The top seed would go to the team with the best record against both of the other division champions, and Boston currently holds that hammer.

• The Red Sox went 5-2 vs. the Indians and 6-4 vs. the Angels (11-6 overall).
• The Indians went 2-5 vs. the Red Sox and 5-5 vs. the Angels (7-10 overall).
• The Angels went 4-6 vs. the Red Sox and 5-5 vs. the Indians (9-11 overall).

Then, in order to break the tie between the Indians and the Angels, it reverts back to the season series between the teams, which we've already told you was tied, and the Indians would again win the second tiebreaker based on division records.

And in case you're wondering, the Yankees went 6-0 vs. the Indians and 3-6 vs. the Angels (9-6 overall), so if they managed to sneak into a four-way tie for best overall record, they'd be the top seed because they have that division hammer on the Red Sox.

-----------
Should be an inneresting weekend...

ShaneJazz AWESOME! Great win by the Sox, then Rivera blew it in the 9th, then the Yankee$ fail to get a run in with the bases loaded, then Millar strikes out as usual, but Mora drags a perfect bunt to give us the division! Special night. Mets had another tough one. They realy must be feeling the pressure now. They're not playing like themselves.

ShaneJazz Nellcote- did you see how drunk Papelbon was getting? Great stuff! Especially bumbling around with the Bud Light box on his head. Didn't see Lugo, Drew or Tavarez anywhere. They must have gone home right afterwards. Timlin and Lowell acting like 22 year old kids. Magic stuff.
29th September 2007 12:08 AM
Nellcote No Man Ram either. Tizzie said he was showered, ready to go home, Tito made him stay. Paps even showered the cop who he shakes hands with when he comes out to pitch. Wicked Pissah Stuff! Bring on the Halos!

Steel Wheels Hamels' gem has Phillies alone in first
09/29/2007 12:25 AM ET
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Standing casually near the on-deck circle, Cole Hamels awaited a seventh-inning chance that might never come -- the opportunity to hit with the bases loaded.
When Carlos Ruiz whiffed, Hamels strode to the plate to the loudest salute on an already loud and giddy Friday evening at Citizens Bank Park. The 45,084 fans applauded the lefty's dominating effort, drowning him with adulation through most of his five-pitch strikeout that served as little payback for how he treated the Nationals.

More roars came as Hamels strode to and from the mound after a scoreless eighth, acknowledging an ace-like performance in the latest and most important game of the season.

The Phillies would take down the Nationals, 6-0, and later, move into sole possession of first place in the National League East, taking full advantage of a Mets freefall that has them on the brink of elimination. On Saturday, the Phillies can clinch the division with a win and a Mets loss. That's when they can celebrate like it's 1993, the last time the Phillies won the NL East.

"[Hamels] dominated tonight," closer Brett Myers said. "If he pitches like tonight, there's not going to be anybody who can hit him."

"He's proven he can perform on a big stage," added reliever Tom Gordon. "That's as big as it gets."

Philadelphia's ace was making his third start since returning from a mild left elbow strain, and he had no trouble fanning 13 batters through eight innings. Washington collected six hits on Hamels' 116 pitches, two fewer than his season-high 118 on May 6.

The Nationals didn't have much of a chance against Hamels, who, for the first time since his return, was unencumbered by a pitch count, and tossed free and easy. He retired 13 of 14 batters over one stretch and had a three-ball count on three just opponents -- one of whom walked.

Asked by manager Charlie Manuel how he felt after each inning, Hamels gave the same response. He would've pitched the ninth, if allowed. He relieved heavily on his curve, rather than his trademark changeup.

"Every time I got into a situation where I could have thrown a changeup, I threw a curve instead," Hamels said. "I talked to Brett and Jamie [Moyer], and sometimes you just need to go out for the first three innings and just throw fastballs and curveballs. It's the equalizer."

It worked.

"He was fantastic," Nationals manager Manny Acta said.

Less than an hour after the Phillies game ended, a few players gathered in the clubhouse to watch the final outs of the Mets' loss to the Marlins. Most were away from the media.

When Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla put away Carlos Beltran's popup to end the game, there was only a smattering of applause, because the Phils know there's still work to do.

"It doesn't feel like nothing," Manuel said, when asked what it felt like to atop the NL East standings. "We got two games left, we're going to play [Saturday's] game and try to win. That's how we're going to do it. Of course we smell it, and we want it. Matter of fact, we might want it bad enough to where we've got to take it easy, relax and just play."

Still, Jimmy Rollins appears right when he declared in January that the Phillies were the "team to beat" in the NL East. That statement sparked a rivalry with the defending division champs that played out every time they met. At Shea Stadium, Rollins become the favorite villain and loved the attention.

While the Phillies aren't there yet, Rollins loves where they are. He and his teammates will wake up Saturday alone in first place for the first time since April 6, 2005.

The Phillies won for the 12th time in 15 games, their best run of the season, while the Mets lost for the 11th time in 15 games. Remember the Phils' 4-11 start that forced them into catchup mode? It took an identical swoon by New York for Philadelphia to get there.

"I've been here a couple of times, so I'm trying to concentrate on one day at a time," Gordon said. "It's not Sunday, it's just Saturday. Hopefully, everything goes well for us. We'll have to wait till we get there. We'd like to be the ones celebrating.

"When you see that plastic up [protecting the lockers from champagne], you know what time it is."
