JAK Earlier today a friend asked me, in the 40+ years career of the Stones, what 5 tunes have they performed live the most. An obvious #1 would be satisfaction, based on the age and popularity of the song. But after doing some research it was left of the setlist during much of the seventies. My guess is that JJ Flash, Honkeytonk, Brown Sugar would be the top 3, with Tumbling Dice, Satisfaction, YCAGWYW and Sympathy battling it out for the final 2 spots. Anybody have any definitive numbers?

Gazza Top 4 I'm pretty sure of :

1. JJF (regular since 68)
2. Brown sugar (regularly since late 69)
3. HTW (behind 'Brown sugar' as it was omitted for most of 72-73)
4. Tumbling Dice (regular since 72)
5. Satisfaction

Sympathy was hardly played between 1970 and 1989, so wouldnt even be close. I'll check later but I'd say #6 would be Start me Up.

ShaneJazz Somehow, against all numerical odds, You Got Me Rocking has slipped into the top 5!

glencar happy?

Saint Sway apparently theres some kind of law in effect that states that they have to play "Honkeytonk Women" in the last spot on the moving Bstage

Honky Tonk Man Honky Tonk Woman and Start Me Up are the two tunes I wouldn't mind them scrapping in all honesty. Both sound stale and dull more than reverting and exciting. Of course, being a nostalgia-based act, I realise they must feature.

Fiji Joe I look forward to the VH1 unplugged special where they will perform Indian Girl...all these other calculations are just mental masturbation

Gazza Did a rough estimate and the most played songs are as follows (margin of error about 5 in each case):

1. Jumpin Jack Flash - approx. 1,020
2. Brown Sugar - 997
3. Honky Tonk Women - 967
4. Satisfaction - 954
5. Tumbling Dice - 951
6. Start Me Up - 742
7. Sympathy For The Devil - 719
8. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll - 693
9. You Cant Always Get What You Want - 615
10. Miss You - 599

'Satisfaction' was played only 11 times between 1971 and 1981, but it had around 250 performances in the 60's.

'Miss You' is surprisingly low because it was only played 18 times on the entire Licks tour.

and in case you're wondering, 'You Got Me Rocking' has been played around 410 times since 1994.

What about Street Fighting Man. That's got to be up there. I'm surprised it didn't make the top ten.

glencar SFM wasn't played much on certain whole tours. I'm guessing it's at about 365 or so...

A good job as usual Gazza. As much as it is a good thing, it is suprising that such a song as Angie has been performed on stage less times than Midnight Rambler!

As Glencar says, there have been whole tours where its been left off. It was a regular from 1969 to 1978, but the Stones didnt actually play that many shows in that time.

Its been played around 570 times.
