Photography legend has first retrospective
By Senay Boztas, Arts Correspondent
ALBERT Watson, the acclaimed Scottish photographer, tomorrow opens the first retrospective of his star-snapping career in Milan.
Watson, who started life in Edinburgh but now lives in New York and Morocco, is also keen to return to his home country to display the striking fruits of his travels for the first time.
The exhibition, Frozen, ranges from celebrity portraits to exotic shots from his award -winning book, Maroc, inspired by his North African home.
Born in 1942, he moved to Los Angeles at 28 and worked for magazines including Rolling Stone, Time and Newsweek. He has captured the likeness of celebrities including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Clint Eastwood, the rap star Snoop Dogg and Mick Jagger, whose face was merged with an image of a leopard.
Although he is more famous in New York than Scotland, Watson is in discussions with institutions, including the Scottish National Photography Centre, about mounting an exhibition in his native country.
Watson’s parents were both PE teachers – though his father had been a boxer and his mother a hairdresser. He was inspired to study art at the local Rupert Steiner school. After studying graphic design at Dundee and film at the Royal College of Art in London, he crossed continents to find his vocation as a photographer.
He has won a Grammy for the best design of an LP cover, and the ANDY award in 1983 for best advertising photographer. Watson’s recent book on his Moroccan experiences won an award from the American Institute of Graphic Art in 1998.
The new exhibition features 375 works from his three books and fashion, music and film work, and is open at La Rotonda della Besana until October 19.
