just let it stand that I don't really consider Elvis to be the first punk. I think it's a bit insulting to consider him so, I think he'd be offended with this notion as well.
rockabilly was a noble endeavor that birthed rock n roll
punk was.........well it was punk. It was too angry, too adolescent, and it didn't amount to a pile of shit, and there's nothing glamorous about punk |

There's a dude here with a LaBeef link in his sig, I'd never heard him before, so I checked it, and it blew me away, Boogie Woogie Country Girl is a fuckin' jam. He's been around since the beginning of time, but is still out there rockin' today. I've got to remember to put this cat on my list for my next cd shopping spree

Yeah, I'd lump Elvis circa. Sun Records in with the very earliest of punk rockers.
It is my opinion that punk rock, like rock and roll itself, was not of any particular form...it is more about the attitude, the wild abandon, being out on the ragged, jagged edge. Gene Vincent, Sonny Burgess, Ed Bruce, Eddie Cochoran...these guys were out on the fringes making wild music, and making it their way. So was Elvis at first. I thought it was sort of stating the obvious that Elvis was an original punk. I thought everyone thought that.
What punk gave us, more than anything, was a catalyst. Punk says to kids of all ages...yes you can, pick up a guitar. Punk took away the notion that you have to be a virtuoso musician to be in a band. Punk says that if you get off your ass, pick up a guitar, and try...something might come out of it. Maybe, but probably not. The big thing though, is that if you never try, it is certain that NOTHING will come out of it. That is the influence on today's music that is more important than any possible form or style. DIY. Try.
It is also that very notion...anyone can pick up a guitar and start a band...that pisses people off, and provokes that negative reaction. There is a very large segment of the population(and the music industry) that only wants music to be made by "professional" musicians. That musical virtuosity is paramount. Obviously I disagree with that stance. I mean, we never would have had some great slices of rock n roll if virtuosity was a requirement. We would have no Louie Louie or Farmer John. We would have no Ubangi Stomp or Drinkin' Wine. No Summertime Blues or Be Bop A LooLa. No Psychotic Reaction or 96 Tears. No Teenage Kicks or London Calling. Hell, without just those last 2 songs, the world would be a much shittier place.
Hey, I'm the first to admit that punk rock has produced a lot more shit than shinola. But isn't that true about any type of music? |
