Topic: Rarities and b-sides Return to archive

stonesmik There's some talk of a forthcoming "Rarities and b-sides" set. Since it is not yet officially announced and even doubtful if it'll ever see the stage-light I herewith suggest a three CD set with the following tracks included as a must. These are actually all previously released tracks, also the live versions. So Jagger wouldn't have to grumble about missing quality etc.

Let it rock [live 1971]
Through the lonely nights
When the whip comes down [live 1978]
Everything is turning to gold
Beast of burden [live 1981]
I think I'm going mad
Fancyman blues
Cook cook blues
Wish I'd never met you
Play with fire [live 1989]
Undercover of the night [live 1989]
2000 light years from home [live 1990]
I just wanna make love to you [live 1990 or 1998]
Highwire
Sex drive
The storm
So young
Jump on top of me
I'm gonna drive
Black limousine [live 1995]
All down the line [live 1995]
Gimme shelter [live 1995]
Anyway you look at it

I have only listed post-Decca tracks since all the official Decca material is now quite easily available. Only real songs, no jingles and the like. Maybe they could also throw in some mixes of their singles but I wouldn't do that since there are so many mixes and it would look like a "best of mixes of their greatest hits". Besides the mixes are too long and take the space for other songs. Also I would exclude humiliated tracks like the edited version of "Mannish boy" as it appeared on "Sucking in the seventies". On the other hand it would be a great move to also include the four new tracks from "40 licks" but I don't see that. Also I don't see the Stones releasing tracks on a Stones rarities box that were not originally released under their name, therefore no solo or guest recordings, with one exception maybe: "The rocky road to Dublin" by the Chieftains feat. the Rolling Stones.

Since all the mentioned tracks are rare indeed but previously released I would like to see 1 CD worth of officially unreleased material - I'm sure you all have your favorites here and this would result in a 25 CD box which will not happen. I think it would be great to get maybe some studio outtakes, maybe some tracks that Jagger would finish for this box set, maybe something from the great lost live album 1972, some more stuff from the El Mocambo, "Chantilly lace" 1982, something unreleased from the 100 Club 1986, something from 2002. I could also imagine some Stones live performances with guests, e. g. "Boogie chillen" by John Lee Hooker and his Rolling Stones... I better stop here before it's too late.

Last song however should be dedicated to the second Rolling Stone:

Key to the highway [Ian Stewart - complete version of the "Dirty work" hidden track]
