LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Replacing Elvis Presley (news)'s 34-year-old "Rubberneckin"' at No. 1 on the Hot 100 singles is a 35-year-old track by the Rolling Stones. "Sympathy for the Devil" first appeared on the "Beggars Banquet" LP, released in 1968. The album-oriented radio cut has never been a single, until now.
The ABKCO-released single, featuring remixes of "Sympathy," enters the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 97. It's the first Stones song to appear on the chart in five years. In March 1998, "Saint of Me" peaked at No. 94.
The first Stones Hot 100 entry of the 21st century expands the group's chart span to 39 years and five months, dating back to the debut of "Not Fade Away" the week of May 2, 1964.
As songwriters, Mick Jagger (news) and Keith Richards (news) now have a chart span of 39 years, nine months and two weeks, counting back to the entry of Gene Pitney (news)'s "That Girl Belongs to Yesterday" the week of Jan. 18, 1964. This song peaked at No. 48 on Feb. 15, 1964.
Amazing record...

You know, it *could* have something to do with the fact that you can actually find the damn thing in stores. I can't remember the last time a Stones single was readily available at places like Wal-Mart/Kmart. (It was probably 'Mixed Emotions'!) |
