Sir Stonesalot Is it just me, or do all of Robert Palmer's songs sound...well...like all the other Robert Palmer songs.

I mean, even his videos were the same.

FPM C10 I'm wondering how he afforded to live in Switzerland on the proceeds of 3 hits in the 80s.

He had a great...well, pretty good voice, but didn't seem to know what to do with it.

Funny, the first thing I thought was also "he ain't no Johnny Cash." Which is kinda sick, but that's sorta what life has devolved to: what sucks today, and can I handle it? Robert Palmer? I guess I can continue to live without him.

luridchief Forget the mid-80s MTV hits and check out Palmer's earlier albums. CLUES is one of the best new wave albums ever recorded! And a lot of his 70s work is work checking out as well--try before you bash, you fuckers!

I caught him live a number of times and he always put on a great show.
09-26-03 12:31 PM
Sir Stonesalot You saw this guy while he was alive?

Whoa!

Did he do that one song...you know...the one that goes...Nuh nuh Nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuhnuh nuhnuhnuh...or the one that went...Nuh nuh Nuh nuh nuh nuh NUH nuhnuh nuhnuhnuh...

I like those.

steel driving hammer SS, are they any early symptoms of a heart attack or does it come on w/out notice? I've been smoking for a while and don't exercise as much as I should. Reason I ask is I take it you get alot of calls like that.

Cheers, now I gotta go take a cigarette break.

sirmoonie You mean, you put de lime in de coconut and drink a bowl up, you put de lime in de coconut and drink a bowl up, you put de lime in de coconut and drink a bowl up, you mean that song?

I dig that tune!
09-26-03 12:38 PM
steel driving hammer Me too Moonie.

How about Pork Salad Annie, baby got yer Granny!
09-26-03 12:53 PM
Sir Stonesalot Why yes SDH...there are early warning signs.

Temporary retardedness escalating to full blown idiotness
The inability to pee in front of others
The compulsion to stay isolated in a hotel room after travelling hundreds...even thousands of miles
Talking about things that you know nothing about
Lying to friends
Taking other people's ideas and passing them off as your own in order to try to impress others
Pretending to be a negro UPS driver
Pretending to be married
Blowing military cadets

And it's Poke Salad Annie, not pork. It's a Southern Kosher thing.
09-26-03 12:59 PM
sirmoonie Jesus! I'm no doctor, but that appears to put him in a very high risk category.

You really should get that looked into, Steelie.

Gazza >How about Pork Salad Annie, baby got yer Granny!

I thought it was "the 'gator's got your granny.."

(now thats "POLK" (bam!) "SALAD" (bam-bam!)
09-26-03 01:38 PM
Sir Stonesalot I'm pretty sure it's poke salad. I know for a fact it ain't pork salad.

I'll go check.

Back in a minute.
09-26-03 01:52 PM
Sir Stonesalot Well Gazza, it seems that we are both correct.

There have been various and sundry releases of this song with BOTH spellings...Polk and Poke. In fact, there is quite a debate about which title is correct.

The original Tony Joe White version was released as Polk Salad Annie. Elvis's version was released as Polk Salad Annie also. Many other versions were released as Poke Salad Annie though, including the Wolverton Brothers, Little Milton, and Clarence Reid...and the proper name of the plant that is being refered to in the song is "poke sallet".

And it is indeed "gator" and not "baby".

Google is an amazing thing. Everything you wanted to know about Polk/Poke Salad Annie but were afraid to ask...right there at you fingertips.

Child of the Moon What the hell is going on here? We ARE losing a lot of great people... I'm starting to worry about our boys now.

That's really too bad. I've always loved Robert Palmer's songs and, no, he wasn't Barry White, but the cat still had a voice, and he still swung like nobody's business.

Have a safe trip, Robert. I'll see you on the other side.
09-26-03 03:19 PM
Highwire Rob Damn! I am starting to feel old in my 30s.

Recently, I'd been playing his Riptide album. And I enjoy his more r&b oriented (earlier) work.

RIPtide Robert P.!

Factory Girl I am sad that Robert P. is gone.

I was very very very sad that Layne Staley had died at the age of 34.

RIP Robert Palmer. RIP Layne

And, btfw, John Ritter's death was f/ing B/S! RIP JR

jaggergurl Rest In Peace, Robert...you will be missed, what a class act and treasure taken from us, too soon
09-27-03 03:54 PM
glencar I never get too upset at celebs dying. This guy was young but I saw some recent footage & he looked a bit thick around the middle. Those model babes from his famous videos were featured on a VH1 "Where Are They Now?" show. Turned out to be a bunch of dumb bimbos who still looked pretty hot.

Juha I interviewd him when he was in Finland a few years ago to promote his album.
He also played live at the Miss Scandinavia (!) competition at a luxury boat crusing on the Gulf of Finland. What agreat guy and a great loss. He had a terrible hangover... Helsinki bars are dangerous...

UGot2Rollme I'm back from my shots.. but..even more than before, I want everyone to listen to "Sneaking Sally through the Alley", which is Robert Palmer's classic, as far as I'm concerned.. (the Stones connection is that he recorded the lp with the Neville Bros, who are one of Keith's favorite bands..)

And, I'm sure New Orleans is one of ALL our favorite places!
