Lazy Bones Concert a loser - and a winner
Molson takes hit on SARS-stock but says show worth it
By KEVIN CONNOR -- Toronto Sun
TORONTO -- SARS-stock is expected to end up in the red and Molson Sports and Entertainment will have to cover the costs, a company official said yesterday.

"It's not going to be the end of the world," said Molson spokesman David Jones. "We'll absorb the loss. There was the expectation going in that there would be risk ... It was a great show and accomplished what it was supposed to."

Officials won't be able to provide a detailed accounting breakdown for the show for a few more weeks, he said.

But one example of the financial difficulty is a $250,000 expenditure for a special seating area for health-care workers and the disabled that was never approved by the concert's treasury board.

"There are things like that floating around," Jones said, adding there are still bills coming in.

The federal government gave $3.5 million and Queen's Park $2 million for the July 20 concert featuring The Rolling Stones and AC/DC. Molson spent another $5.5 million.

Any profit from the event was supposed to go into a benevolent fund for health-care workers.

One dollar from each of the 400,000 tickets sold did go into that fund and organizers were pleased overall with the international coverage promoting Toronto.

In the U.S., 560 articles on the 11-hour show appeared in major newspapers.

There were 18 live segments on CNN as well as coverage on Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, E! Network and The Today Show.

The Web cast of the concert also generated between 1,000 to 1,800 hits a second.

Liberal MP Dennis Mills, who helped stage the show, had predicted it would be a success. "If it doesn't make money, it won't matter much to him next spring if there is a (federal) election," said University of Toronto political scientist Neil Wiseman.

LET IT LOOSE OH, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD....I WAS AT SARS-STOCK AND SO WERE

NEARLY 450,000 PEOPLE.THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD LOSE MONEY....UNLESS THE ACCOUNTANTS,WHO NOW HAVE THE MONEY,
ARE NOT HANDING IT OVER?????

BUT,ISN'T IT INEVITABLE,WHEN THE STONES ARE INVOLVED THERE WILL BE THE NEGATIVE NEWS THAT SEEMS TO FOLLOW THEM LIKE SHADOWS.

THE STONES WERE FANTASTIC, THE DAY WAS BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL.BUT, AS KEITH WOULD SAY, THERE ALWAYS HAS TO BE A BLAMEHOUND.
