Topic: Just for the record: Stones taking a crap (1989 until now) Return to archive
September 23rd, 2005 03:31 PM
stonesmik As a Rocks Off special I have collected the very worst songs by the Rolling Stones released from 1989 until now. Take a deep breath and listen to these:

1989:
Continental drift
Break the spell
Slipping away
Cook cook blues
Wish I'd never met you

1994:
Moon is up
Sweethearts together
Thru and thru
The storm
So young

1997:
You don't have to mean it
Always suffering

2002:
Stealing my heart
Losing my touch

2005:
Infamy

These songs are so awful bad noone would ever want to play or hear them live (except maybe Keith), some of them can't even be called songs since in fact they are mere jams or riffs, piano noodling etc. But the band is getting better with every album so I have also collected the best songs of this period:

1994:
I go wild

1997:
Flip the switch
Saint of me
Might as well get juiced
Too tight

2005:
Rough justice
Streets of love
Oh no, not you again
Laugh, I nearly died
Look what the cat dragged in
Driving too fast

If Keith would only stop singing the rate would even get better, I suppose.
September 23rd, 2005 04:10 PM
Saint Sway I put these on the good songs.

Hold Onto Your Hat
Break the spell
Slipping away
Cook cook blues
FancyMan Blues
Highwire
Love Is Strong
YGMR (yes I like it!!)
The Worst
Thru and thru
The storm
So young (actually from Some Girls)
Drive
Mean Disposition
Jump On Top Of Me
I Go Wild
Lowdown
How Can I Stop
Too Tight
Already Over Me
Rough Justice
BOMH
It Wont Take Long (althoug LIS, Lowdown & IWTL should only count as one song: Wicked As It Seems Parts I, II, III and IV)
ONNYA
This Place Is Empty
LIND

plenty of good stuff here - esp the b-sides. Overall though the records are half-assed

nankerphelge 1989:
Continental drift
Break the spell
Slipping away
Cook cook blues
Wish I'd never met you

===> Wrong on Contnental Drift and Wish
Plus you missed Blinded By Love -- their worst ever.

1994:
Moon is up
Sweethearts together
Thru and thru
The storm
So young

===> you are correct about Sweethearts -- wrong on the rest and you missed Baby Break it Down

1997:
You don't have to mean it
Always suffering

===> Agreed, but you missed Already Over Me

2002:
Stealing my heart
Losing my touch

===> What About that horrible Keys song

2005:
Infamy

===> AND Biggest Mistake and Neocon

These songs are so awful bad noone would ever want to play or hear them live (except maybe Keith), some of them can't even be called songs since in fact they are mere jams or riffs, piano noodling etc. But the band is getting better with every album so I have also collected the best songs of this period:

1994:
I go wild

===> Mean Disposition

1997:
Flip the switch
Saint of me
Might as well get juiced
Too tight

===> Out of Control

2005:
Rough justice
Streets of love
Oh no, not you again
Laugh, I nearly died
Look what the cat dragged in
Driving too fast

===> Driving Too Fast doesn't belong
You forgot Dangerous Beauty and Back of My Hand

To each his own I guess!!

you completely lost all credibility with your very first selection

Unquestionably one of the best tracks they ever recorded and if anything the BEST song theyve released in the last 25 years

I must be a "jam and noodles" kinda guy, cuz I like

Break the spell
Slipping away
Moon is up
You don't have to mean it
Stealing my heart
Infamy <-- keep going back for seconds on this, mmmm
September 23rd, 2005 05:47 PM
Egbert Would Sing This All Together (See What Happens) be considered noodling?

God, can you imagine the bashing that would take here if we had the web in '67 (and I could type at age 2)?

I couldn't disagree more with 95% of your list! How can a hsardcore dylan fan dislike some of these Keith songs you've listed... I just don't understand!
September 23rd, 2005 07:37 PM
Soldatti Infamy it's one of the best songs in ABB.
September 23rd, 2005 07:53 PM
gotdablouse I for one wouldn't call "Infamy" a song so I'm not sure it qualifies for that original list, it's the most indulgent jam I've ever heard on an official recording, possibly even worse than the stuff on side 6 of Harrison's ATMP !

Oh and "So Young" was recorded in 1978, Mick just rerecorded the Vox in late '93 as part of the cancelled "extra tracks" project for the Virgine releases. He also said he had done Fiji Jim at the time, it never came out.

Your taste is afwully bad. Continental Drift is probably the best song they've recorded in ages. The storm, So young are outstanding. Thru and Thru is a good song. Cook cook blues and Break the spell are better than every song on Dirty Work.

Musically great, lyrically subpar
September 24th, 2005 04:47 PM
Highwire Rob Continental Drift? You can't judge it by the lyrics. In fact, I think Mick should have just ditched the lyrics on that one altogether. The tracks positive vibe for me comes from the band's reconnection and experimentation with Moroccon rhythms. A neat call-back to Brian Jone's passions.

And without the "Continental Drift" intro how would the Steel Wheels tour ever have had that soft--to cannon blast orgasmic opening? I don't think any band will ever top that kind of Rock & Roll blood rush/hackles standing on the back of one's neck live opener.

I can't agree with "Stealing My Heart" on your list either. For me, it's definitely a sing-along feel good track that I look forward to when I play Disc 2 of their greatest. It's lyrically well written and the pace is such that I find it uplifting.

poor immigrant That list really is terrible. MOON IS UP is very underrated as a song and performance. Live it was killer.
I would only agree with about half your selection, but would've added others in their place.
September 26th, 2005 04:35 AM
Zack Wrong on Too Tight and You Don't Have to Mean It.

You forgot New Faces. That belongs on any shit list.

Read my post and you'll see I'm with you - yes, "Flip the switch" is among the outstanding tunes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

But "Continental drift" isn't. No. no. no. It's just a cheap ride on the then hip World Music wave. Another attempt to cash in. This is not Rolling Stones. This is Hamri and his pipes. The contribution of the Stones is absolutely minimal. They just stole one more idea of Brian Jones.

If you really wanta hear the drift then buy some weed and listen to "Brian Jones presents the pipes of Pan at Joujouka" (released 1971) - a full album of great Moroccan music. It's the real thing. And if you don't know this album you are not allowed to discuss this matter at all. Basta. basta. basta.
