When I was submitting ideas, this was kind of the point. I find the online Stones community completely fascinating, esp. since it seems to have happened spontaneously without much assistance or encouragement from the band. I tried to present a kind of Greenfield/Booth/Flippo style all tour long proposal, except do it on the OUTSIDE with fans rather than a inside view of a Stones' tour. Lots of bands have intense fan interest, but few are as obsessive and eight-ball as the Rolling Stones community.

The message boards were going to be an aspect of the idea - I had vague ideas about contrasting created on-line personalities with their actual humanity, while finding some of the better Stones analyses and interpersonal interaction that appear here and at Keno and somehow presenting them. The E Book thing is a good idea -- but perhaps Rocks Off as it is is its own contribution to world literature.

When I found these message boards last November, I was shocked. Wow, I thought, these are people who think about the Rolling Stones and are affected by the Rolling Stones in much the same way I have had my worldview and sensibilities altered by them. It's safe to say I've become a Rocks Off junkie, and I can't help think there's something going on here that is in some ways supernormal.

This thread, for instance, has developed into something beyond a bunch of people talking about how cool the Rolling Stones are. It may not be literature, but it is definitely compelling reading.

But most publishers were like you in wondering who, beyond the weirdos who know the personalities established and involved, would actually like to read about it.

Of course, nothing kills a thread quite like a Nasty Habits post, so my appearance is probably a signal that this one is over.

It's also sorta intermingled a lot between very different communities since I've been online and following it on and off. Since 1998. I think there were more semi official sites back then. I think the Forum - which this place grew out of - was official - right? Never read that place but heard about the Flynn disease that spread. To Stonesworld. I never read anyplace else except the newsgroup. Is that still around? Mary Manning was incredible. She had a schizophrenic sort of poetry about her and she used to piss everyone off. RELENTLESSLY. Except FPM and I were great fans. She even started an online porn "career." Is she still around?

The only other music community I've checked out was the Elton John one after one of their spammers sort of intermingled and posted links on SW. Crazy Water or something like that. Even weirder than the Stones thing - if that's possible. Just picture it...makes a few places in the Stones community seem pretty well balanced by comparison.

"he message boards were going to be an aspect of the idea - I had vague ideas about contrasting created on-line personalities with their actual humanity,"

You may have a hard time there. The real crazies are so far gone they don't realize they're under a microscope in a way they're not aware - and some of us are quite happy play slumming and having a ball without any real guilt by association. The boards can be a backstreet girl but if you want us to bring her out to the country club...um...don't think so...

Maybe I'm wrong though.

"While finding some of the better Stones analyses and interpersonal interaction that appear here and at Keno and somehow presenting them. The E Book thing is a good idea -- but perhaps Rocks Off as it is is its own contribution to world literature."

I think the idea of archiving by a good objective editor is the way to go if that's the case. Too much sludge to get anyone except the junkies involved.

I've always thought a certain art is stumbled upon. Never would have expected it. I actually found
Stonesworld by typing in "rolling stones bootlegs" on a search engine. I can't believe I remember that and practically nothing from Democracy in America! Where has my brain gone! Anyway, led me to the board since someone must have been advertising them-then read posts for hours straight until my head ached. But it got boring and too fan -ny for a while. Regained my interest when it got weird again. This guy calling himself the doctor came on and stated flaming these funny named posters and at that time I thought it hilarious that people would get so bent out of shape about their silly little annonymous characters getting flamed. That they took it so personally.

"his thread, for instance, has developed into something beyond a bunch of people talking about how cool the Rolling Stones are. It may not be literature, but it is definitely compelling reading."

And no one has brought up circumcision yet!

"But most publishers were like you in wondering who, beyond the weirdos who know the personalities established and involved, would actually like to read about it.'

That is why serious editing and formatting would be needed. The personas can be sculpted into literary characters. People slip into narrative easier than you think.

"Of course, nothing kills a thread quite like a Nasty Habits post, so my appearance is probably a signal that this one is over."

Ah - you see... you need to be eggheady AND piss people off. Just watch me...

Raging GOAT!!! Who is the author of these books? That is what I want to know. When lots of people write the things on the message boards, who is the author? Where is the center of the power that determines the content and direction of the thread? Or if that you know, what about the content and direction of the board too? Where is power? Where is authorship? It's there to find. Knowing that can figure the outcomes in the end.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Who are the real crazies, Dandelion? Let's just throw some names out there... I just want to hear who's under the microscope and why are you spending your time "studying" them? Aren't there better things to do, like working-out, for one??? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what I was supposed to do today... I don't think this will work... I just don't think people care too much... Message boards are considered "nerdy"... I'm sorry I'm being blunt, but that's the vibe I get when I mention message boards to anyone here... I DO live in L.A., though, where everyone has been there, done that, and bought MY t-shirt, etc., etc., etc., and even in Orange County, where it's nothing BUT nerds!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just not holding back this month... lol........................ Peoplae are just into "cool" now and following theirt own cliques and trends, etc., or they're just hanging with their families, traveling, etc.... Well, that's what I see... Basically, what I'm saying is that the term "computer nerd" and/or "computer geek" still applies, unfortunatelt, 'cause i LOVE message boards and the internet... To me, it's a lot less nerdy than people think, IMO... Better than spending all your money shopping... lol.................... Much better...

Raging GOAT!!! But Dandelion is intelligent Martha, non?
09-22-02 12:57 AM
MarthaMyDear Non-intelligent... lol................... :P HE!!! HE!!! lol.............. :P

Soul Survivor Hey Martha, did I win the contest? Please give me a hint
09-22-02 01:05 AM
MarthaMyDear I have to go through ALOT of entries... Ugh... lol................ That reminds me... FUCK!!! Wow... I'm not sure I like being this busy... lol.................... I'd rather talk all day, which I did today!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't give any hints or anything... That's not fair and unprofessional, as if I'm really looking professional now-a-days!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P I don't care... I think of this board as my fun time and relaxation, you know... I'll be posting the answers there when the contest is over, though... THANK YOU FOR ENTERING!!!

Dandelion* Martha is far brighter than I, moo cow goat man. So bright in fact that she didn't get my point. I too need to work out a little but I can't get to sleep now because I'm trying too hard of course. May have to sleep on the ride to Tower. Perhaps if I read the duller nerdier threads it will put me to sleep. Where are the Mick Taylor threads? Anyone got an url?

Moo cow goat, you bring up good points about authorship. How far are you willing to go? Do you understand what I'm implying? Sometimes I think you do and sometimes I think you don't...
09-22-02 01:48 AM
Raging GOAT!!! Where is authorship in the postmodern world without the Center? Well, we have the website which is the microcosm. It has the capillaries. But capillaries I never liked as Foucault metaphor because heart controls blood the flow through the capillaries. But is there control on the Net, or the microcosm here? "Power is everywhere and power is nowhere." Yet what determines content is more than just the minds of the posters. Their very thoughts are shaped by the structure of the situation, which says that power is to those who structure it.
09-22-02 02:03 AM
MarthaMyDear POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!! And, visa-versa...
