My daughter (newly 13) went to see the White Stripes at Providence's Performing Arts Center last night, her first real concert (Aaron Carter does not count and she was eight months when we brought her to a Dead show!). Theater was about 4,500--sold out, college crowd mostly. The Greenhornes opened up, a power trio that covered a Yardbirds tune for old-timers like me and otherwise played passable power pop. The White Stripes came on at 9:10 by Jack White emerging from the back of the theater, walking through the crowd, and settling by the theater's Wurlitzer in front where he proceeded to play "Saint James Infirmary" as Meg set up in her drum kit on stage. At the dnd of the first song, Jack went up on stage. He had pancake flour/reverse mistrel makeup, a straw hat, and a cane. Meg was all in black. The stage and all instruments were in the usual red and white alternating patterns. They rocked...Jack is a ferocious player and he and Meg have great interplay. Forget the power trio, viva le power duo!! They did most of the new album for forty minutes, then took a ten minute break---Jack emerging without the makeup this time. They broke out some older tunes, including "Ball And A Biscuit" and "The Hardest Button To Button" and covered L'il Richard's "Ready Teddy" in hardcore style and Dylan's "Lovesick" as a metal dirge. The closer was "Seven Nation Army". BTW, this closer finished at 10:30 so all in all the music was probably only some 75 minutes!! Keep that in mind all those who bitch about the Stones' shows---our boys put on a meaty show!!! All in all--they rock, they can REALLY play, and have a unique approach...but they need some stamina!!! |

That is correct they played Loving Cup over the PA at the Columbus show that we attended. I couldn't help myself and began to ask people (mainly young people since that was the majority of the audience) what song was playing (they were groovin' to it). Guess what......NO ONE I asked knew it was the Stones. No One.
Indeed.
Upon reflection I've realized that I must begin teaching Stonesian history to the youth of this country. Do you think I can get a grant for that from Michael Cohl? LOL
Give me another drink...from your lovin' cup! |
