No Chuck anymore, please! I just think it could have more long guitar solos and maybe it could be a raw R'n'R driven album (less ballads and moderate songs).

Lethargy What could have made ABB better?

Answer: Not including lame songs like Infamy, Dangerous Beauty, Look What The Cat Dragged In, She Saw Me Coming, Rain Fell Down, Sweet Neocon, Driving Too Fast, and Streets Of Love, and instead including more good songs like Rough Justice, Let Me Down Slow, It Won't Take Long, and Laugh I Nearly Died.

That's what it comes down to for me. Love the 'sound' (i.e. pure guitar, drums, harp), love the energy, just a little too much bad songwriting, particularly in the area of cliched lyrics and unimaginative riffing.

Who said anything about Chuck? The best Stones tunes always had a great piano. A rock n roll or a blues record without a piano is like coffee without caffeine.
September 20th, 2005 03:18 PM
lotsajizz more good tunes like Dangerous Beauty, LWTCDI, and Driving Too Fast and (especially) that elegiac ballad 'Streets Of Love'---that killer version on RS.com shows up the Macca-lovin' nature of its detractors

Funny!!!! It was a disappointing effort giventhe 8 yrs, but apparently they simply were spent after Tattoo You with limited exceptions...I guess the creative juices just dwindled with age, money, and the hatred Mick and Keith have for one another , Who would think that since SMU, the Stones would never have a single that even remotely was a hit.
September 20th, 2005 03:50 PM
VoodooChileInWOnderl LOL the first word to come to my head when I read the title " What could have made ABB better?" was "PIANO" then the late Nicky, the other day I was adding imaginary pianos to BOMH
September 20th, 2005 04:00 PM
Sir Stonesalot >the Stones would never have a single that even remotely was a hit.<

Undercover of the Night, Harlem Shuffle, and Mixed Emotions were all hit songs with heavy airplay. Mixed Emotions was in the top 5 for about a month. Love Is Strong was in heavy rotation on MTV and VH1.

And SMU never made #1 in the USA.

You'd figure that a guy who can get himself through law school would check his facts.

Hey JB....Maxy and I were looking for you on the 13th. We had a big bet on. I said you were gonna be dressed like Mike Reno again, and Max said that you'd be all designered up. So what would it have been?

Those were not good songs and certainly marginal hits ....I wore Jeans and a whit Theory Neru collar shirt.....It was very hot and humid at the stadium. I shall return in 06 with winter attire. Sadly, I was to attend Hershey, but no direct flightd and I don't do non-stops/prop planes.

marko No what,but who.
Answer is:Ian Stewart
September 20th, 2005 04:58 PM
VoodooChileInWOnderl Nicky Hopkins Marko, he added creativity, Stu was great but not as creative as Nicky
September 20th, 2005 05:02 PM
marko I miss the swing. What ian did, that was unique.
September 20th, 2005 05:06 PM
VoodooChileInWOnderl Sure it was Marko... the best boogie woogie while Nicky was the best bluesy piano and overall.

Saint Sway the formula for a rockin Stones album is simple in 05.

1. LIMIT MICK. This man must be stopped. Handcuff Micks hands behind his back.!This will prevent him from writing any more crappy pop songs. He should only be allowed to sing. And definately dont let him play any guitar parts like he did on Rain Fall Down.

2. IF KEITH CANT ROCK ME, SOMEBODY WILL. Bring in Rich Robinson to overdub Keith's lame guitar parts. Dont even tell Keith, just do it. Stones fan will flip over the heavy riffs and vintage 70s Stones sound.

3. JACK WHITE AS PRODUCER. Give Don Was enough of viagra supply and money for escorts to keep him out of the studio for the entire length of the mixing & recording process. Hire Jack White instead to produce it. He's shown that he produce a wide range of styles and certainly knows a thing or two about how loud, raunchy, blooze soaked rock should sound. Let Was produce the Bonnie Raitt's of the world. He doesnt fit the Stones.

4. MORE RONNIE SLIDE! What do the really great Stones albums have? Great slide! What do BTB, DW and Undercover etc have? No slide! I say give booze, pills and powder to Ronnie and let him go nuts on slide playing. The slide on RJ is one of the lone moments that actually sounds vintage Stonesish. Let him play slide on every tune.! (Along side Rich Robinson, of course.)

5. KEITH ON BU VOX. Let Keith sing or croak or whatever on backup vocals. And turn his vox up in the mix! I want to hear his raspy voice trying to harmonize beyond Micks. No more of this pro-tools doubling of Micks vocals. And on Micks vox - stop altering his voice....

6. which leads me to....NO PRO TOOLS! Record on tape!!! Its a warmer, fuller sound. Bang sounds too thin and tinny.

7. WHERES THE GREAT ACOUSTIC TUNES? Record an acoustic country song or two. Real Stonesy ones like LIB or Torn & Frayed. No Alfie acoustic ballads like BM.

8. KEITH NEEDS TO PUT OUT A ROCKER. Enough ballads. Cut off Keiths cigarette & vodka supply until he writes a legit rocker for one of his songs. He only gets one slow or mid-temp song. Bring in the Wino's if necessary for inspiration.

9. NO FUNK SONGS. I repeat: No funk songs. Its been like 26 years since they came out with a good one. Since then their attempt at funk has always resulted in the most unbearable song on the record. Case in point, Rain Fell Down, Suck On Jugular, Terrifying. Back To Zero. Please stop. That well is dry.

10. WRITE WITH FEELING. Strive to write quality Stones lyrics. No rhyming yellow and jello. Make up a nasty tale like Hand of Fate. Or pour your soul out in a ballad like Let It Loose. Or shoot for some decent rock lyrics like Sway. Mick & Keith raised the bar as to what rock lyrics should be. 40 years later they shouldnt be reversing to lyrics that Jon Bon Jovi would consider low brow.

ha ha! see #2

I'm serious too. He sounds more Keith than even Keith these days.
September 20th, 2005 05:25 PM
Nellcote Hey Sway, Who's Rich Robinson?
Is he....
the illegitiment son of the famous "Mrs Robinson"
Simon & Garfunkel sang about?
OR
Jackie Robinson's son Does he play baseball?
OR
Or is he related to David Robinson, known as "The Admiral"
from the San Antonio Spurs?
OR
Related to Abraham Robinson, leading authority on aerodynamics?
OR
Does he work for the seed company, W Robinson?

Oh, NOW I remember.......

He's the guitarist for the Black Crowes!

I recall a story recently posted here that someone on this board saw him play at a rib joint. During the show, it was announced you could either get a rack of ribs or his new solo lp, which spawned the now famous post "I took the ribs"

Yeah, that Robinson. Yeah, that's the one I want replacing Keith Richards, good ol rib boy!
September 20th, 2005 05:32 PM
Saint Sway Whether or not you are willing to admit it. Keith is a shell of his former self.

unfortunately, both he and Mick have already come to this conclusion, which resulted in Mick playing lead on a number of bad Bang songs.

if he's no longer up for the gig. Than secretly bring in someone else.

and then brainless sheep like yourself can praise how great and vintage Keith suddenly sounds.

ResidentMule Terrifying is a funk song?

problem with Rain Fall Down is that it ISN'T funky. funk has bass, Rain Fall Down has weak keyboards and programming loops.

ditch Don Was & Matt Clifford. Don Was worked well for Voodoo Lounge and acceptably on B2B, the longer he stays with the Stones the blander they get.

Sway you've got to be kidding with this Rich Robinson thing. too far man. Rich is great where he's at - lets not mess with 2 good things

worst part about this album is Mick's melodies and lyrics. house/mouse; town/down/ground etc. and weak melody lines like It Won't Take Long - KILLED that song. great Keith riff, straight down from there

September 20th, 2005 05:35 PM
Nellcote There is nothing to admit other than No Keith=No Stones.
Otherwise, pass the sauce for them ribs.

September 20th, 2005 05:36 PM
gotdablouse Yes something is definitely missing, maybe because we heard all these bits and pieces too, it doesn't help make it consistent. First thing to fix is real guitar lines/leads, that's been my fear all along, how was Keith going to find the time/energy to craft them ? He didn't, except on IWTL and that's still subpar. And yes where is the jangling acoustic song ! What does save ABB compared to say VL is the quality of the tunes, much more memorable than the indscript VL riffing. RFD is good though, not very Stonesy but best groove since Miss You I reckon. Having said all that I think I prefer B2B, maybe because of the interesting guitars in Already Over Me and because there was no clunker like Infamy, worse song ever IMHO.

Sway, you are SO RIGHT ON THE MARK it makes me scared. Except for the Robinson overdub part - now you've gone too far!

Then again, if they can secretly erase Ronnie's guitar on It's Only Rock And Roll, why not secretly erase some of Keiths parts too?

Your post not only accurately describes what's lacking in ABB, but it describes the elements of what we love about this band's catalog and essence. You give me warm fuzzies Sway.

What could have made ABB better?

If whole lot of jaded 'so called' enthusiast s would get their heads out of their asses and realize that it is not 1972 anymore, the stones, like they should have, have moved on, and that A Bigger Bang is a great album.

That would have made it better for me.

A very reliable source told me that Rich was in fact asked to record with the Stones on the ABB sessions. But he declined citing a scheduling conflict. Apparently, he was too busy cleaning toilets in hope that he might be able to find his solo career and the last 3 black crowes studio releases.
