Ditto
A great few days seeing the Stones in Dublin bookended by the deaths of two of my favourite artists. It's been a very up and down week music wise.
A giant of a man in every way.

DAMN it. DAMN IT!! You know, some of the signs of the End Times are fun - like seeing the Sex Pistols in 2003, or hearing Iggy Pop songs being used for cruise line commercials. But THIS particular signpost of the end of the world SUCKS, almost unbearably.
FUCK MTV for not using their last opportunity to pay tribute to one of America's greatest men. His face should be carved in Mt. Rushmore, except that those other guys were politicians. Johnny earned his living being HONEST.
I saw The Man in Black twice, and both times his performance was somewhat flawed by people he shared the stage with (Dylan Tribute, '92, w/June Carter Cash doing "It Ain'Me Babe" - god bless her, but she was a little shaky that night; and R&R HoF Concert, '95, inviting John Mellencamp to wreck an otherwise perfect version of "Ring of Fire") but his stature, even on a stage full of rock's biggest names, was unmistakeable. He stood head and shoulders over EVERYONE, and not just physically.
Man. I knew this was coming - "Hurt" was obviously his goodbye - but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm not ashamed to say I'm crying while I write this.

I have been trying to muster up the courage to watch the Hurt dvd.
I just can't make myself hit the play button.
I just can't. |

and i'm not ashamed to say i was crying by the time i'd finished reading it...
forget the details, for me, the real JC made the first LP i ever got my hands on...
query?? was he a bullshiting when he said he knew the prison life but all he did was get locked up overnight for having some ugly pills??
all that aside, his death only enhances his stature - and for what more could you ask??!!

As I said over at Gasland, this was my initial reaction: "Fuck. Fuck! FUCK! FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!" Johnny Cash... the cat was a legend in his own time, and his influence knows no bounds. I'm so goddamn sad and angry right now.
There's this big, stone bench here at my school that people paint during the night to advertise whatever... Greek council, school stuff, or just to make a statement. Well, my roommate and I (he's OBSESSED with Cash) are thinking about going out right now, in broad daylight (which is NOT when you're supposed to paint the bench), and painting the whole damn thing black... and then spraypainting a solotary stencil of the Man in Black over it.
Anyone ever hear Johnny Cah's version of No Expectations? It's damn good. He said, "How did Mick Jagger and Keith Richards write a song like that?" Mick and Keith probably thought the same thing about every song he wrote.
Thanks, Mr. Cash. Take care on your journey.

I don't get upset at celebrity deaths but I had recently come to appreciate Cash's music. His version of One is stirring. |

Mr. Cash-so many gone, so few left.
Thanks. You know the rest... |

wasnt it kind of eerie in retrospect to hear it in Dublin last night before the Stones came on? (although its been played at all the other recent shows too)

To remember Johnny CASH, STONES should sing a song of this great artist in Wembley Concert for example.

One of the greatest and most human singers/writers ever. So many of the greats are going now, how will we cope? At least we have the records.
Thanks Johnny. |

I am only conforted by knowing that Johnny was not afraid to die and was prepared to pass. He will be so deeply missed by millions of fans. It is nice to have this board to post our personal respects and to share with one another in the sadness. Hugs to all.
This Sunday (tomorrow; 9/14/03) 60 Minutes is running a piece on his life. Last night VH-1 did as well and afterwards they aired an hour long concert that John had performed with Willie Nelson. Very intimate and nice. I hadn't seen it before..does anyone know what year that took place? It is nice to have so much left to all of us to listen to and to view. Aren't we blessed by that?!
May you rest in peace Johnny.

Martha, I think that concert was from the mid-to-late nineties when the two did an album together. |

Virgin Radio is dedicating a show to Johnny (R.I.P ) tommorow night - "On Sunday night at 10pm, (BST) Captain America will be paying tribute, with contributions from Bono, Emmylou Harris, Don Henley and Rick Rubin."
He did a great special on the release of American IV: The man comes around.

Thanks glencar! I figured it was recorded somewhere in that time frame. Thanks for the info! I always learn so much from the astute people who post here. :-)
By the way, here's what Mick had to say on the subject of Johnny's passing:
"His influence spread over many generations. I loved him as a singer and a writer. I remember years ago a big part of our repertoire was two of my favorite Johnny Cash songs, "I Walk The Line" and "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen." |

Friends Say Goodbye to Legend Johnny Cash
Associated Press
HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. - Family, friends and musicians gathered at Johnny Cash (news)'s funeral Monday to pay tribute to a giant in American music.
"He represented the best of America; we're not going to see his like again," said singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson (news), who wrote Cash's 1970 hit "Sunday Morning Coming Down."
More than 1,000 people attended the private two-and-a-half-hour service at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, about 15 miles north of Nashville — the same church where Cash mourned the death of his wife, June Carter Cash (news), in May.
Cash, 71, died Friday of respiratory failure caused by complications from diabetes. He had been in declining health for years.
"I can almost live in a world without Johnny Cash because he will always be with us," said Cash's daughter, singer Rosanne Cash (news). "I cannot begin to imagine a world without Daddy."
Among the celebrities attending were country singers Vince Gill (news), Hank Williams (news) Jr., Travis Tritt (news), Dwight Yoakam (news), George Jones (news), Ricky Skaggs, Ronnie Dunn, the Statler Brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys.
Other celebrities in attendance included rock-rapper Kid Rock, actress Jane Seymour (news) and former Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites), a native of Tennessee.
Kristofferson called Cash "Abraham Lincoln with a wild side" — a man always willing to champion the voiceless and downtrodden, "whose work in life has been an inspiration and salvation to so many people around the world."
The Rev. Franklin Graham — son of Cash's friend, the Rev. Billy Graham — called Cash "a good man who also struggled with many challenges in his life. He was a deeply religious man."
Emmylou Harris (news) and Sheryl Crow (news) sang the gospel hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross" and Bob Dylan (news)'s "Every Grain of Sand."
Cash, known as "The Man in Black" for his preferred attire, said in a hit song that he wore the color in honor of the poor and oppressed. He was buried in a black coffin with silver handles.
As the service came to end, country singer Larry Gatlin addressed his own son, Joshua Cash Gatlin, from the pulpit: "Son, this man fed your mama and me when we couldn't afford food. He paid rent for us when we couldn't pay rent."
For more than four decades, beginning in the 1950s as a peer of Elvis Presley (news) in Memphis, Cash specialized in earthy songs about hard times and brooding love songs. His hits range from the rockabilly anthem "Get Rhythm," to the comical "A Boy Named Sue," to the recent "Hurt," about the ravages of drug abuse.
Cash rose to fame in his late 20s, but his career was nearly derailed by an addiction to pills. He credited his wife, Carter Cash, whom he married in 1968, for helping him beat the addiction.
His commercial peak was from 1969-71 when he had a network television show with guests including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell (news) and Kristofferson.
After a dip in record sales that lasted nearly two decades, Cash partnered with rock-rap producer Rick Rubin and recorded four critically lauded albums that found him a new, younger audience.
After the death of Carter Cash in May, Cash spent most of his time recording, leaving more than 30 songs yet to be released. He had planned to attend the MTV Video Music Awards shortly before his death, but couldn't because of illness. His video for "Hurt" won an award for cinematography at that show, and he has four nominations at the Country Music Association Awards in November.
Gatlin, Marty Stuart (news) and producer Randy Scruggs were among the active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers included Kristofferson; Rubin; singers Rodney Crowell (news) and Willie Nelson (news); Marshall Grant, who played bass in Cash's original band; and his brother Tommy Cash.
A public memorial was also being planned.

The man was the best and worst of America. A huge icon-like Presley- though infinitely tougher, stronger, angrier, determined, and flat out pissed off.
A beautiful man, a beautiful walking talking contradiction.
Now he's gone away...
He's off to a better place, but it fuckin' hurts for those left behind.
Fuck yeah it hurts. Goddam it! Too few left to pick up the slack man. Cats today ain't got the spine.

Wow does anyone have a boot of them doing I Walk the Line?
I saw that Story Tellers the other night on VH1. It was very good. In honesty I would say Willie Nelson was a notch above Johnny that night. But his greatness is undeniable throughout.
