Jethrostone I'm getting into David but I'm not sure which of his albums I should get next. Here is what I own so far:

Hunky Dory
Ziggy Stardust
Aladdin Sane

Anyone know what I should get next?

.....from 1970-1985 :

Better get:
Diamond Dogs 1974
Station To Station 1976
Heroes 1977
Low 1977
Lodger 1979
Scary Monsters 1980

All these albums are absolutely superb.

Avoid:
Pin Ups 1973 (IMO a very uninteresting album)
Young Americans 1975 (2-3 great ones, rest is unbearable)
Tonight 1984 (2 great songs, rest is crap)
Never Let Me Down 1985 (crap)

In-between:
The Man Who Sold The World 1970 (highly regarded by some, but in my ears; it sounds dated and too moody)
Let's Dance 1983 (slick and dull at times, but contains 4-5 great "pop" songs...)

lotsajizz even the two on the avoid list have their moments.....I'd say avoid Let's Dance and Blue Jean

Yes I agree, just like Rolling Stones - there's good moments at all albums. ...apart from "Never Let Me Down".

_Boomy_ You should get it ALL.

Even the latest stuff ("Heathen", "Reality") is pretty damn good.

Rule of thumb. Get everything released in the 70's (well, up to and including 'Scary Monsters' (my personal fave) in 1980 to be precise)

Erik's 'must buy' list basically matches mine.

CraigP Considering that I've owned my parent's cassette copy of "Let's Dance" for years, it's not surprising that
'Young Americans'(1975) was the first album by Bowie that got me hooked.
Alot of Bowie fans dislike it, but it's sure as hell alot better than some of his other material.
There have been times when it's been on my turntable for weeks!

Then I discovered Ziggy and I was blown away.

The other's I've yet to hear in full, such as
Daimond Dogs as well as Station to Station.

Chuck Not a Bowie album per se, but Mott the Hoople's 'All the Young Dudes'(1972) was produced and arranged by him, he plays sax on it, and he wrote the title track, which became a minor hit.

'Momma's Little Jewel', 'Sucker', 'One of the Boys', 'Jerkin Crocus', and 'Ready for Love' are fun, hard-rocking songs---some of the best the 70s had to offer, in my opinion.

Ian Hunter and Mick Ralphs really shine on this one.

Torn and Frayed Get "The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions." It is a collection of Bowie songs done in Portuguese. Definitely worth a listen.

mojoman as mentioned previously everything up scary monsters is a classic besides the early anthony newley inspired efforts.
man who sold the world is a very heavy disc. the low/heroes/lodger sequence is also killer.
8th September 2007 03:16 PM
lotsajizz 2003's "Reality" was very good..other than that I avoid the post-"Scary Monsters" (also my personal fave) albums like the plague
8th September 2007 03:21 PM
Erik_Snow I think the only terrific Bowie album after Scary Monsters is "Heathen"...that's a magnificent one.

A lot of Bowie fans loves the Outside and Earthling albums,
and I have tried and tried; but I can't really get into them.

"Reality" is like A Bigger Bang; it doesn't grow on me!
Not bad, not good, just hidden in-between

TomL Get em all and make your own decision. I am hoping he will hit the road soon.

jaymze Scary Monsters is a great CD, I especially love the singles that he released from it.

Lets Dance are great CD as well, it is a bit "pop" but it did the job with boosting his career. I'm a big CHIC/Nile Rodgers fan so I guess I'm a bit biased with that choice.
9th September 2007 12:03 PM
keith_tif For me OUTSIDE it's the best bowies' album .

On this album, he takes many risks because it's a very non commercial album.
But to like it, you should listen and listen it.
It's a album with a real atmospher.

And when Bowie made this album, he was more than 50 years old.
Imagine the Stones making a such album after 50 or still after 30 years old...)))

Wide As The Clyde "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" was Bowie's last truly great LP. ""Heroes"", "Low" and "Lodger" are often referred to as 'the Eno trilogy', and are all really good records. "Young Americans" is criminally underrated, as it's easily as well conceived and executed as "Ziggy". "Aladdin Sane" was always going to suffer, critically, in the shadow of it's predecessor. "Diamond Dogs" is superb. "The Man Who Sold The World" is nearly great, again it is done no favours by the accessibility and popularity of "Hunky Dory", but it's mostly a better and more coherent record. "Stationtostation" is the sound of the cocaine running out, but is brilliant.
"Stage" is essential, "David Live" thoroughly missable.

In lieu of "David Live," I would recommend "A Portrait In Flesh" currently being seeded over at Hunger City.

http://www.hungercity.org/details.php?id=3950&hit=1

It's toward the end of the Diamond Dogs tour (still had the full staging) but already started recording "Young Americans" and had the expanded band with backup singers (including Luther Vandross). Quality is great, performance amazing and unique.
