Topic: Stones To Slip Down UK Chart Return to archive
September 14th, 2005 12:19 PM
Honky Tonk Man According to todays Sun newspaper, A Bigger Bang is expected to slip down to number 13 in the chart next Sunday.

David Grays new release is expected to enter at number 1, with James Blunt going down one place to number 2.

Meanehile, Macca's new effort is expected to enter at number 8.

Oh well, at least we beat that prat!

Soldatti Typical slide, only die hard fans are buying the CD. It will be out of the Top 75 in 3-4 weeks.

Well, there must be a heck of a lot of die-hard fans for it to reach number 2!

It is disappointing though. Albums always slip down, but going from number 2 to number 13 is quite a dramatic drop. I know 40 Licks also failed to hit the top spot, but at least it held it's top 10 placing for a while, didn't it?

Soldatti 40 Licks spent 3 weeks at #2 in UK!
But a greatest hits album is always a big seller, B2B only spent 6 weeks on the Top 75 in UK with a "poor" chart run:
6-12-27-38-62-69

At least ABB reached #2, an impressive position.

I didn't know Bridges To Babylon did so poorly!

Like you put it, a Stones studio album reaching number 2 in this day and age is a fine achievement. I actually think it has something to do with the coverage it's been getting over here.

Quite a few papers have run stories about Sweet Neocon and of course, there was the penis incident!

Soldatti I just got midweek sales in UK (Monday/Tuesday):
- A Bigger Bang: 2-14! (only 2,400 copies sold in the last two days!)
- SOL/RJ: 56-68

Macca's album is not a sure Top 10: it's #8 but with sales of 6,500 copies in two days and the #11 album is very close with 6,300. ABB sold 12.7k only the first day, the double of Macca in two days.

The #1 album (David Gray) sold 39k in two days, almost the same of ABB in the whole week!

Let's say: ABB reached so high position due slow sales last week, it was the lowest #2 album since May 14th, just see:

Good. However, would you of being more happy if I'd refered to him as "a cunt"?

Gazza I'd be surprised if it goes down that far in its second week, to be honest. However, first week sales were pretty good by comparison with the usual figures and those of other countries

Stones albums have a sort of funny chart life here anyway. Enough diehards invariably buy it the first week to let it chart in the top 3, it slips out of the charts a few weeks later and then about 9 months later when the band finally get around to playing here, the general public discover it and start buying it in enough quantities for it to re-enter the top 20.

I'd be interested to see how they'd do if they toured Europe just after an album's release (which hasnt happened since 1976) like they do in North America. Considering they're not on tour here until next year, their sales throughout Europe are pretty respectable.

So we did better than McCartney. Excellent. the worm has turned!

egon But why don't they put out a single in EVERY country
WITH a video?
Now it's just half/half. Not a very good way to promote an album.

I'll confess, I didn't read the top of your post. I thought it WAS Macca!

The resemblance is quite creepy.

stonesmik The English audience has lost its taste 30 years ago around 1975 before punk. There no measure at all. Even the Stones had to leave that country for its lack of taste... so what the hell who cares if a Stones album is number 1 or 34 in merry ole England!
