It is one messed-up film alright. Be honest with yourselves: would you keep on watching it, hadn't it been for Mick and Anita?
My sister and I watched it last night and we found ourselves exchanging quite many "WTF?" looks up until the point Chas reaches Turern's house. Not that they stopped after that
Subtitles would have helped as well... The heavy accents and the fact the film's quite old didn't quite help someone whose english is not the primary spoken language.
Quite avant-garde a movie, I suppose, for its time, but I found it pretty boring to be honest. I was expecting a lot more. I liked the Anita / Mick combination and this is the first time I've actually seen the young Anita walking and talking on video, apart from some short clips here and there (and the occasional Barbarella of course, but in Performance she stays closer to what she was really like).
She was really good! In fact I think I liked her character and playing even better than Mick's. She exudes all this magnetism and a dangerous, experimental aura and that accent... All the reasons she had three of the Stones falling for her, in just about less than an hour of film.
And Mick's looks at that time... You can see where e.g. Placebo drew their inspiration from, amongst others
So, what do you think about Performance? |

It's a great film. I liked the first part the best.
Very influential. See Sexy Beast and Gangster #1 as starters.

abso-fucking-lutely. And what makes it most watchable is James Fox, not Mick or Anita.
Agree with Dande - the first part of the film is especially superb. terrific movie.

I saw this film so many years ago I forgot what it was like. So I've been looking to buy a copy of it, but I'm sure its out of print because I've been searching for it for about 10 years already, and its no where to be found.
FotiniD, where did you find it? |

I found it on E-bay. You can find good copies of it and pretty cheap!

Stick with the VHS tape, my advice. The dvd is not original, just a rip-off from the video tape and overcharged as well.
And judging by Gazza's and NBTP's comments, I must be the only one who doesn't like it Quite embarassing I'll try it again as soon as it finally gets released on DVD, with the subtitles on this time, maybe I'll get it |

Saw the film in '72 at The Playboy Theater in Chicago.
It is a mind ripper steeped in the magical realism of Jorge Luis Borges, sorcery and psychotropics. Mick got me in but Cammell and Roeg made it one of the greatest films ever.
When {if ever} released on dvd, watch it on acid, at deepest night. If you dare.
Can anyone burn me a copy of "Donald Cammell: The Ultimate Performance" ???
Also watching "Stoned" the influences of the brilliant film making on display in Performance are completely evident, albeit to a lesser degree.

My favorite part is when Fox tells Jagger "you'll look funny when you're fifty". |

When I saw it in 72...that'a all I remember is thinking "WTF?" I saw Zappa's 200 Motels at about the same time in the same theater and thought WTF? as well but that was what they were looking for. I think. Anyway thats the only time I saw Performance. I do want to see it again just to see what I think now. If only for Anita Pallenberg, I didn't know who she was when I saw the film...had no clue.

Is that the x-rated version with the extra footage of MICK and Anita in the bathtub? I want a copy of THAT version. Does anyone have a clue where to find this? |

No..its a documentary about Cammell - it was shown on TV in the UK a few years ago
The "X-rated" clip youre thinking of is supposedly of the 3 in a bed scene (not the bath scene) where Mick and Anita had sex for real. It wasnt in the finished version of the film.
I've read several times that the 'uncut' scene was 'bootleged' and won some award at an Amsterdam porn festival, but personally I think thats an urban myth. It would almost certainly have circulated had that been the case. |

I think that Performance's strengths really come clear on multiple viewings. Its structure and ideas are complex, and don't really go too far out of its way to help the viewer figure them out. I remember being somewhat baffled when I first saw it, which wasn't helped by the fact that I was watching a fifth-gen bootleg taped from the Movie Channel.

Yes thats the uncut version when the camera was still rolling and they were gettin their ROCKS OFF. I've been looking for it with no luck for 10 years. I'm beginning to wonder if it exists, or if it's lost. |

That is the film I'm looking for. Cammell's story is mysterious and sad. |

I always wondered if the Star Wars lightsabers were inspired by Performance too. Not that I ever bothered to research the question.
I liked the film too -- plenty of funky visual ideas, and surprisingly coherent (especially compared to other films starring Anita!) |
