Chuck With God On Our Side

Bob Dylan

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

voodoopug Very emotional day. We must also think of the families that were torn apart, children that will grow up never meeting their father or remembering their mother other than in their hearts.

for all those who were lost, all those who were saved, and all those brave souls who with no regard for themselves saved so many... you are always remembered, never forgotten...

GotToRollMe I had the misfortune of seeing way too much that day. Now I walk through the site several times a week because my train runs through the "basin." Five years later and I still cannot wrap my head around it. To paraphrase snap 13's post, God bless all those who perished that day, and God help us all.

I miss the people I lost, and I miss the towers themselves. I always thought of them as twin brothers.

glencar Howard Stren replayed his show from that morning. Shocking day. The American Airlines pilots seemed a bit different this morning; like they were remembering their murdered colleagues. Today in NY is pretty similar except it's a bit chillier & cloudier. Rest in peace to all who were killed and God bless their families.

No prob. I still remember the whole thing very well. Had the day off and was watching tv when I, by coincedence came across CNN. I called my brother to tell him a bizar plain accident had happened. Seconds later I saw the second plane hit the Towers. And I knew the world had changed.

LadyJane We lost what little innocence we had left that morning.

I'll never forget it.

To all the brave men and women who lost their lives, may you rest in peace.

saw every second of it on TV that day... most powerful few hours (and days, really) of my life.
America's mistakes aside - the world needs to come together and defeat the evil we saw that day.

I wish peace for all the families that still suffer.

Jair I got a friend, Antonio, and he is always going to New York, cuz he love the city.

Then, a few days after the 9/11, he told me: man, will gonna be hard go back to New York and dont see those towers no more, believe me.

Yes, of course, I believe him.

I never had a chance to go to New York, but it seems lie those towers just no more exist.

I wish you all Americans better days and strenght to get over it.
Carry on, my friends!
