I don't care as the Stones are still my favorite band-warts and all. Bowie is nothing but a poser . I hate him and his music.

keith_tif For me the best Bowie's album is definetly "OUTSITE" in 1995.
If you have seen SEVEN of David Fisher, it's the music of this movie.

But it's very difficult to like this album at the first listen, you must listen many times before appreciate it. In 1995, on this album Bowie worked with NINE NINCH NAIL.

Riffhard His best can be debated till the wee hours. However, his worst is without doubt his abortion called Tin Machine.

Riffy

lotsajizz I don't know Riffy, it sucks but I'd rather listen to the Tin Machine than that infernal "Let's Dance" crapfest!!!

I love Outside. I guess it can also be tied for best. Great tour too, saw him 4 times including 3 times with Nine Inch Nails. Las Vegas 10/19/95 is my first, and still the best Bowie show I have ever seen.

I kinda like the first Tin Machine album and have one of Reeves Gabrels solo albums.

No........."One tin soldier rides away"....
===========================================================
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

tin machine was a great band. maybe the songs were not classic but fer a seventies star in 1989 it was pretty damn good(see mixed emotions). saw them in 91, not as good as his other retirement tour the previous year but fun.

glencar I ahve several of his CD's. I think his 80's stuff is actually pretty comfy/dull. I'd pick Aladdin Sane.
11th September 2006 03:55 PM
Gimme Shelter Aladdin Sane
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust
Hunky Dory
Heroes
The Man Who Sold the World
Let's Dance
Diamond Dogs
Heathen
Scary Monsters
Outside
Tonight

I like most of Bowie's stuff. I've seen him five times.

I nominate these two posts as the WORST EVER posts on Rocks Off. jb has had some low points...but nothing beats this.

David Bowie has written some of the greatest music in the history of civilization. Period.

FUCK ANYONE WHO DISAGREES.

scary (80) 9 votes
hunky dory (71) 8

Young Americans is ok, some like it a lot but it doesn't really do much for me, aside from the title track and "Fame." Bowie's only weak studio album of the '70's imo.

I'm personally not crazy about either David Live or Stage. The soundtrack to the Ziggy Stardust concert movie is the best official live Bowie. The album has never had a good reputation, but I suspect that's because of the poor sound quality of the original release. The 2003 remaster is fucking awesome, great versions of "Hang on to Yourself," "Ziggy Stardust," "White Light/White Heat," and others.

Anyway, my pick of Bowie's best.

1. Scary Monsters
2. Diamond Dogs
3. Station to Station
4. Low
5. "Heroes"
6. Hunky Dory
7. Aladdin Sane
8. Ziggy Stardust
9. Lodger
10. Outside

I'll even go out on a limb and say I quite enjoy Bowie's '80s material. There are no great (or even really good) Bowie albums from the '80s, but he's still got a lot of great songs; "Never Let Me Down," "Let's Dance," "Modern Love," "China Girl," "Blue Jean," "Absolute Beginners," the original "Cat People," and "Zeroes" to name a few. (Actually that might be about it, but I still enjoy bits and pieces of Let's Dance, Tonight, and Never Let Me Down).

everybodys got their favourites from each period. i am suprised by scary being voted the highest among those that voted, i think it shows a knowledge of his work. indeed its the last "classic" album he made we can all agree on. i dont even own young americans, i prefer station to station. as far as live david live is a great album. the stages album i like because of the different material. search out resurrection on 84th street from the 76 tour i like it better than david live if you like the era.

with some of the best guitar playing on any album, ever.

Robert Fripp plays like a man possessed on it.
12th September 2006 09:58 PM
lotsajizz Fripp is one of the few guitarists from that era as good now as he ever was.
13th September 2006 10:01 AM
Ronnie Richards Yes, Scary Monsters is indeed a great album (personal fave at the moment - "It's No Game"), but where is the love for Low?
As I have already pointed out, it's Bowie's best album!
